Gigging lights

I am wanting to get my boat rigged for flounder gigging. I haven’t done it for years and would like to give it a go this fall. My boat is an 18ft. flats skiff. I am looking for some home made kind of rig. Advise on lights, LED vs incandescent etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I like LED because they run cool and use little battery power. I recently made some handheld lights with these 20w LED heads from Oznium: http://www.oznium.com/home-super-bright-spotlight. They are convenient underwater lights because they are already sealed waterproof and they screw right on to a 1" PVC adapter.
I too am thinking about some type of frame/kit for my flats boats and will likely use these 3 or 4 of these 28W Oznium “Tractor Lights” http://www.oznium.com/27watt-led-work-light. Since they draw about 1.2Amps per hour of power, they should run all night (heck likely many nights) on one charge of 24 group deep cycle battery.
So far, I’ve been impressed with the company. Last order got to me in 2 days with good instructions for rigging.

been gigging commercially for many years. I have tried the LED’s, spot lights, underwater lights, and NOTHING beats the cheap (under $15) halogen work lights. You can buy all four for what 1 high output LED costs.

Yeah, but don’t those halogen lights draw heavy amps from the battery(s)?

Those hydro-glow LED gigging lights are pretty sweet. Lightweight, waterproof, ans draw very little power. Check em out!

a q beam works fine for us poor people. quiet too.

If you can wait about another 60 days the owner for Alumiglo has informed me of a kick butt LED light that is coming out. You should be able to run two of them off of the front of the boat, and have all the light that you need. It is not the ones on his site right now. These will be circular, and I think he said they will draw about 6-7 amps each. That would give you 7-8 hours on a good group 27-31 battery. He told me each one would light up a 30 foot diameter circle. They sit just under the water surface, and have a top to them so you get none of the glare off the water back in your face. He told me that they should run about $150 each.

Run off of a generator

Sellsfish has the setup. My brother-in-law has a similar setup and it’s awesome. He uses a ryobi generator and puts it on top of two gym mats in the boat. Never see any mud trails from spooked fish.

I used to run 5-6 500w halogens off a generator but got tired of setting it up & hauling it around (from Charlotte). So i figure i try the sea striker lights & I am very impressed with the 12V system. The only con is they are kinda pricey though @$75± each. Regardless i’m happy with them.

You can always make money but you cant make time.

I had two new lights let a friend use them and I guess he thought i gave them to him.GONE.He sold the (**() things I guess.

Sounds like your “friend” owes you a few $…

No he just lost my business.

my flats boat rub rail is a good 3/4" thick, anyone consider attaching some LED lighting to the bottom side of the rub rail for gigging?

I am wondering if something like these IP65 rated 1200 lumen LED strips could be used for gigging:

http://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/top-emitting/wfls-x-series-weatherproof-high-power-led-flexible-light-strip/1466/#/attributes/3

it’d sure be nice not to have to rig & un-rig the boat for gigging…

Sellsfish, is it better to have the lights up high farther away from the water like that so they light up more water? other reasons? I usually see them lower or actually in the water, but I have definitely seen both ways

chevy: That looks like a very promising solution. With a few modifications it would probably work well.

Do led’s work above the waterline (as opposed to submersed)? Don’t know, just asking. I figured there would be a lot of glare.

My current set up has the rail at 20 inches above the deck. It cast a much better light pattern than right on the deck.

Are those in the water, or just above?
