Gigging Question

Is a 17 ft sea pro bay boat too heavy to gig from? I am a rookie when it comes to gigging and thinking about investing in the lights and gigs to start doing it some out of my boat. I know a small jonboat is more common, but would mine be okay? Also I saw someone ask about running a trolling motor in an earlier post but didn’t get a great response…would a trolling motor scare away the fish? Thanks.

i have always gigged from my jon boat due to running over oyster beds and scratching up my boat… the lighter the boat the better but your sea pro will work just may need a longer pole… i have never used a trolling motor just worked the boat with the tide and just pole along the banks its worked great for me with little effort… Good luck!

When you jab a fish, you not only need to anchor him to the bottom, but you also have to stop the boat so you don’t run over him. The heavier the boat, the harder it is to do. You will also run your boat onto the oyster rakes frequently.

A trolling motor works great…flounder won’t move unless you touch them… yes a jon boat is better but use what you got it will work.
