Gigging

I’m planning on going gigging sometime this weekend and don’t know a lot about it. I have all the equipment but am still unsure if one light will sufficiently light the water well enough. Also, when looking for spots for gigging, what kinds of places should I look for?(sandy bottom, sandbars, creek mouths) I will be fishing the stono. And any information will help! Thanks

I have 5 1600 lumen lights and I would like to have more. I don’t know of any good spots on the stono but you can check out the river banks where you see troughs come out of the flats. I have not seen anything worth while in pluff mud.

If you have not been out before, you are in for a treat even if you do not get anything. I had no idea there were that many turtles. There is all kinds of stuff to see at night.

Sand/Shell bottom, Gig the low tide with the tide rising so the water is clear, the less wind and more light the better, don’t stick the redfish please refraction and “science” makes it had to judge their size. Low boat traffic is key because wake will ruin everything.

I like using my head lamp. Look for flounder in a slightly steeper/narrow channel with mud on both sides.

Why??? most people that gigg, also fish and can tell the “slot” fish from under or oversize. Redfish are darn near as numerous as mullet in the harbor. Stick away!!! But don’t post pics of gigged redfish or the peanut gallery will come on here and blast you…

I was thinking the same thing. I have to know how big a flounder is to stick it by looking at it. Most of the reds I have seen when out are no more than 3’ away. The slot range is more than adequate to gauge a legal fish or not by sight. I think there is also a lot of misconception about gigging from watching videos on YouTube. I have been skunked gigging just like fishing. It is nothing like stabbing fish in a barrel.

We always used a Coleman lantern (with half of it shielded with aluminium foil on the globe. Worked just fine. More light is a personal choice.

As far as gigging redfish, no big deal. Legal, and pretty easy to tell how big they are.

Restrictions:
It is unlawful to gig for sharks.
It is unlawful to gig red drum or spotted seatrout during Dec., Jan. and Feb.
