Gill Nets in Hamlin?

Heard a story about some guys getting busted back in Hamlin SOund running gillnets on insane amounts of redfish. Anyone know anything about this?

no but if it’s true I hope DNR puts their nutz in the crusher.

There is nothing - absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Kenneth Grahame

Does DNR have a public report of bustings?
I would like to see that! Don’t care about the “who” but I do for the “what”
They wrote 38 tickets (at least) outside the NCFC the other day, but not sure for what, but they were only checking for over/under size fish or limits.

Told you all I heard. Thanks for your help, though.

Heard 3 nets were pulled but nothing about a culprit. DNR is in there checking the sound out often now. I would have loved to have run into the people doing that…

I know a captain that reported one to DNR the other day and they asked him if he could pull it up and throw it away. WTF?

I got my 2 best guys on it now.

Sounds like an episode of COPS that I saw. Went something like this:

Fisherman: “No officer, you don’t understand. The guy at DNR TOLD me to pull this net out of the water and throw it away for them. No, really!”

Cop: “Sir, put your hands behind your back. You have the right to…”

been going on for many years up in there.I tore several to shreds about 20 years ago.We would find them at low water, put all of the bass back in the water, and start cutting the net.Why DNR cant stop it is beyond me.same group from the same area.

our state govnerment want give dnr enough dollars to do what they need to do

I know a guide that pulled up a couple in Hamlin just a few years ago… Like you said Graham, I’d love to catch the guys doing it, but i’m sure they are doing it at night…

you guys have issues with gill nets in general or just people that put the up, leave them, and keep fish that you are not allowed to keep from nets (reds)???

Bolbie, 20 yrs ago gilnets were legal. You broke an 18 pt violation. Good thing the man didn’t pull up on you.

undersized mesh, net over 250 yds long, unattended,no buoys on either end. These nets were run hard at night. The bass and trout that were sold illegally would have blown your mind. Why do y'all think there was a ban on spot tails years ago? They were nearly wiped out from dudes netting them illegally.Again, bark up a different tree and take your comments back to the playground.

again everything you said was legal. There wasn’t a minimum net size , poly, float rope was used. Letting fish go dry was a common practice. A net without a floating top is useless. Nets were always fished at night. We fished 1400 yards of net and it was legal. Face it, you broke the law. I do enjoy playgrounds with my kids.

as instructed by a long time DNR officer. So you are from the 6 mile community, and are proud that you raped and pillaged?I never had to use gill nets,I could catch plenty to eat on hook and line. Some folks have to be greedy, what a shame.

we made a living in an honorable profession. we fed people who couldn’t catch thier own. we didn’t ruin other peoples work tools. You still broke the law as you wern’t an official officer. some people feel they are above the law and that’s a shame.
