goin to da mountains

I’m heading up to Jones Gap State Park this weekend for a solo backpacking trip. I picked campsites along the blue line on the map so as to be close to some water. Gonna be near some mountain streams and stuff and figured I might as well try to catch a fish or two. My 8wt might be a bit too big for that stuff though anyone have any recommendations?

I was up there last weekend. Didn’t throw a rod. Water was a little low and crowded. I plan on going this weekend after some bigger fish. We’ll see. Good luck.

yes, toss soft hackle flies up and swing all the way through…5-6x tippet (6 is better) but a softer 2-3wt will protect dem tiny tippets. a hares ear SH has crushed some very educated and fished over trout that way for me. emerger patterns have also been killer there. up dat-a-way in the summer though, id use a small beetle (16-18) or an ant fly in the pockets and switch to the SH for the runs and pools. it is beautiful there, u will dig it. take us some pics!!

Shoot me a pm when you head this way. Might fish but I usually stay away from those parts until the wigglies go back to sleep in October.

Well I made it up again this past weekend. Water was about gone. Caught a dozen fish. Almost like sight casting because you could see the wake or backs of the larger fish moving around feeding.
I usually don’t fish for trout during this time of year but couldn’t make a trip down to the coast. We need rain. If anyone wants to meet up a toss a few fly’s give me a PM. Good luck at Jones.
