Does the gold spoon attract freshwater bass like it does the spotails in saltwater?
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there’d be a shortage of fishing poles.

it will work but not as good, spinnerbaits are better in my experience…mudfish love them however
Mudfish huh? Never thought of them.

Not sure of the color but I’ve seen guys catching bass on Monticello jigging spoons.

It’s all fun and games until they open the trunk.
The Gold Spoon, almost a lost art. I presume you are speaking of the Johnson Silver Minnow in the gold color, that’s the one that I am refering to. The 3/4 size with a piece of pork on the hook can be deadly in the spring (white or Frog trailer). Get a good pair of waders and fish the grass beds in the bottom of the upper lake, especialy around the Rocks Pond area. Be sure and use a good life jacket as there are some holes in that area. You realy don’t need a boat as you can start wading at the public boat ramp at Rocks Pond, Use a rod with plenty of back bone an 30lb. test on a good level reel. There is one more modification to the spoon that a dear friend of mine who is now deceased, Master Chief Howard Cotten taught me, feed a 9 inch plastic worm up on the weed guard, slow retrive. Good Luck!!!
Thanks for the tips and the info. I used to use peices of hotdog on the end of a beetle spin to catch crappie.

hippy, I know of this Old Master Chief. It warmed my heart to read his name. He used to have alot of pictures up at the Outboard Shop on Rivers. Smokey ran it then. or before him Popeye? hmmm:question: Howard probably could be called the father of lowcountry bassfishing. He plied the ricefields of the Cooper River before there were trolling motors. I know he is smiling right now. thanks

i really like spoons(gold ansd silver) for greenies. i put some plastic on them and throw them on top of the slop. i bring it across and get some blowups but catch most when it drops off an edge. i think it comes across slop bettere than a texas rig because the spoon shape keeps the tie in up above it.
big plastic can kill the action but nothing will turn a worm into a snake action better than a johnson. they are amazingly weedless. i dragged one all over the bottom of rodman res which was hanging up everything else with no problem
we dont need no reservations we dont need no cruise control
Gold color Johnson spoons with white pork trailer are deadly in stained water retrieved near the surface on top of grass/weeds. Vary your retrieve speed depending on conditions. Works really well on cloudy, overcast days.

I hadn’t heard that name in a long time, either. Guys like Howard Cotton and Harry Thomas were well known back in the day.
