I was at Batteries Plus checking the price of a new trolling motor battery today. I am using a 12V motor on a 18-foot Hewes and while I know the motor is undersized for the boat, I really do not have the money to buy a new motor at this time. Regardless, the salesman told me that instead of purchasing a group 31 with 225 minute reserve 12V deep cycle that I should look into purchasing two 6-volt golf cart batteries and running them in series to give me 12V. He said the weight would be almost double and they would take up more space than the single group 31 but that I should get well over 2 to 3 times the run time with the golf cart set up. Anyone have experience with this?
you would be better off getting two 12v batteries and hooking them together pos to pos and neg to neg

I agree with Ed. The 6V batteries do typically have high amp-hour capacity, but rigging any two identical batteries in parallel with double the amp-hour capacity while preserving the voltage. I’d just buy some good, high amp-hour, deep-cycle, marine batteries. Exide makes some good ones, among others. Look at amp-hours, not just reserve minutes.
