Goo in gas tank

I was syphoning the gas out of my Carolina Skiff tank and I use a rod to hold the tube in the bottom of the tank. I was going to fill it with fresh gas and I noticed this goo on the rod. It is real think like molasses and sticky like tar. I guess it is gas that has turned to varnish or something. You can see the tube is about 1/4" from the bottom of the tank. My question is do I try to remove it or leave it as is? 1980 DLX with 27 gal tank that was replaced a few years ago, maybe 6 or 7 yrs ago.

You should consider a new tank. I’ve been there and haven’t found a good way to get it out.

Maybe someone else has found something, but I wouldn’t risk trying to clean it. You might just dislodge a few chunks and have a clog on the water.

A new gas tank is much easier, especially since yours is removable, correct?

Yes, it is under the console in my 1980 Carolina Skiff. I suppose I should replace it and the gas lines also maybe even the pickup tube.

Chris should know! It’s a lot cheaper than buying a new powerhead.

Well I guess I will replace it all and get the carbs cleaned. The tank is stained where the gas level was and I will get ready to spend a few (hundred) dollars.

I’m just curious, do you use E10 or E free gas? Any additives?

For the last couple of years it has been ethanol free but can’t say for sure since the tank was replaced last time. My son has been using the boat but he moved to California and it is mine again. I tried to use Ringfree and Stabil Marine but I can’t say for sure since I didn’t maintain it.

Those 27 gal tanks are not cheap.

I got to thinking, wonder what is in the bottom on the tanks of the below deck tanks, like in a 20 yr old Grady. How would you get it out?

I ordered a new 27 gal tank, WOW! with shipping about $300.00 for a half gallon of plastic. I guess it is the cost of playing on the water.

I ordered a new gas tank from Chatlee and they said it would be about a week and $300.00. I waited a week and called them back and they said that Carolina Skiff didn’t make these tanks any longer and it would be made by Moeller and would be 4-6 weeks.

I got a tip from the Carolina Skiff Owner site and was told to get Purple Power Degreaser. I removed the tank, drained it and rinsed it out with the hose pipe (if you are not from SC it is a garden hose). I poured in a half gallon and let it sit for 2 days. Rinsed it out and it was as clean as you would want. I left it in the sun for 3 days to completely dry. Rinsed it with a gallon or so of gas, installed new fuel line, filter and mount, bulb, all fuel components. Sweet and saved $300.00.

I doubt CS even made the original tank.

If you ever need to buy a new tank, www.speedytanks.com is the best place I’ve found, and very quick service. I’ve bought 4 or 5 from them. They have cut files for most standard production boats tanks, or will custom build anything you need to suit. The boats I build all have custom aluminum tanks made to fit the space. I draw them just like I want it, including fitting locations and angles. Email them the drawing and a week later have a (usually) perfect fitting tank delivered the door.

They also built the tank for the GW I pictured above. 50 gallon custom aluminum was about $500. I just had another 35 gallon custom built and it was just over $300. Shipping charge is about $100.
