Good & Bad of coated anchor chain?

What is the Good & Bad of coated anchor chain?

I understand it is more gentle to decks… How long does it take for the plastic/PVC coating to come off?

I wouldn’t waste your money. I tried one years ago. After about a year, the coating started cracking off and looked like crap. Get a good galvanized chain.

I run about 10’ of the 5/16" orange coated chain from Lowes. Seems to be holding up well! Keep in mind I only drop that anchor maybe 6-8 times a year… I’m not opposed to it at all!

Tried some years ago, after a few trips it started to rust and split the plastic coating, then a lot of rust and pieces of plastic coming off, made a mess of the locker! Hard to beat gal. Read long ago to run the chain in a bike inertube to stop it from scraching the boat.

Pro tip. You can get an innertube for $1.99 at wallyworld, cut it, thread the chain through and zip tie in place.

Save yourself a lot of frustration…get a galvanized chain. Hanckel has great prices on anchor, chain and other stuff - they don’t gouge you like West Marine for example.

Hated mine. In addition to what the others have said it is much stiffer and would clog up my anchor locker. The 200’ rode would go in fine then I have to contort the 6’ of coated anchor chain juuuuust right so the anchor would fit. Then it started to crack/rust etc.replaced it with 12’of galvanized, loving that.

I’m thinking my chain must be powder coated and not plastic coated or dipped… mine only has nicks and scratches in the orange, there’s nothing to get stiff or clogged. But I’m sure you can’t go wrong with galv. chain though! I do kind of like the idea of the inner tube trick!

Yeah, I think you’re right Stump, I’ve seen that chain at Lowes. The one I believe he is talking about actually has a thick coating of flexible vinyl on it but the links are kind of stuck together by the vinyl. It doesn’t last too long.
