Good Beginner Spottail Setup?

I grew up here and have done a lot of inshore fishing in Charleston with spinning tackle. Didn’t get really get heavy into it until I got home from school a few years ago but now I’m on the water every chance I get. I made the mistake of fishing on a friend’s flats boat and getting into a bunch of tailing reds. Now all I can think about is throwing a fly to 'em! I am looking for an inexpensive beginners setup for reds. I really just want something to feel out the fly fishing game before I commit and drop a paycheck on a really nice setup. Does anyone have something like that (8wt or 9wt?) and is interesting in selling?

You can buy a combo and probably come out under $150 if you buy new … w/o line

Okuma Cascade for $30 or $40
I am sure someone makes an 8wt rod for around $100

Thats if you wanted new, I am sure someone on the site as an 8wt setup they are willing to let go of for the right price

experience noun \ik-#712;spir–#601;n(t)s

  1. the fact or state of having been affected by or gained knowledge through direct observation or participation

  2. that thing you get just moments after you needed it.

I’ve got a Sage DS and Reddington reel combo I would sell. Would like to get $200 (line included).
With Sage you get a lifetime warranty. $50 and they will repair/replace no questions asked.

Go to LFS or the angler. The redington crosswater are pursuit are good combos!

Islander- Sage warranties are for the original owner only… and you register the rod when you send off your warranty card… they are non transferrable… and sage is getting tougher on their warranty stuff so if buy a sage from someone and you don’t get a warranty card… you don’t have a warranty… Just good stuff to know…

Thanks Mad one. I’ve sent a rod that was given to me in 2x and never had a problem. I retract my previous statement if its not correct. And a price drop is in order as well.

yeah… I know people who have pulled it off as well… but Just figured I’d point out the “letter of the law” so to speak… I have had people get refused, and like I said Sage (and all flyrod companies) are getting more strict on their warranty stuff…

I appreciate it. Considering buying a used Sage myself, and that’s valuable info.

Thanks for the advice everybody. Ive gotten most of my spinning gear at the angler and they’re always really helpful. I am very familiar with spinning rods and reels but fly gear is definitely new ground for me. Sent you a message, Islander. Not sure about his rod weight but in the meantime, if anyone else with a beginner setup in an 8 or 9 wt is interested in selling, let me know!
