Anybody have any suggestions for decent quality fly lines at a good price? Looking for an intermediate sinking line and don’t want to spend $60-$70. I’m still new at this and dont want to spend a lot of money trying things out.
A good fly line make the difference in casting. If you get a crappy $20 line it will be a crappy $20 line. I have done that when I first started, i was tryign to save money and it almost make me give it up. I spent $70 on a good SA line and all of a sudden I could cast longer then 20 feet and I could feel the rod load and unload… Seriously get a good line. HOWEVER… I have some sinking lines, not sure if they are intermediate, in the shop in Summerville that are on clearance so you can save the $$$ and still get a good line. If you plan on fishing the grass for reds you need a WF Floating line… The water is very shallow and you dont need the sinking line. if you are trying to get deeper for trout then you may need it…

You can fish trout with floating line by putting a sinking tip on it. Won’t go as deep as a true sinking line, but works. Learned this from our guide in Canada fishing for browns on the Bow River. Looking forward to trying it in our waters.

I agree with PalmerScott, sink tips might be the way to go (New line = extra spool, extra spool = $$$). I think Cabelas makes some good budget lines. They get a major manufacturer to make their lines (i think its SA these days) and then sell them direct. You can get a good line from them at about 40 bucks. Not all lower priced lines are crap, but more are than not. I definitely put a few cheap ones on my trout rod before I found a decent one.
Good lines definitely equals better casting. Pay the cash if you have to, but you can probably find a good one on clearance. I got a hell of a deal on a Redfish 7 weight floating at the Mr. P Angler for $17 a few years back.
