Thought the weekend was a bust ‘cause I couldn’t find a crew for Sunday, but I ran into a buddy Saturday night who invited me to ride along on his 36’ Jersey Devil express, Sea-Batical.
Left MI at about 5:30 and put lines in at the Winyah Scarp at about 7:30, and had pretty steady action throughout the morning on dolphin and wahoo. This boat is the wahoo-raisingest thing I’ve ever seen… seems like every time he goes, he kills 'em. We ended up with nine dolphin (all gaffers, but none over 15 lbs.) and five wahoo, including one nice 45 pounder. Lost another big wahoo at the boat.
The best part of the day came at about noon, though… had a double hookup of sailfish, with a third free-jumping in the spread. I got one rod, and Hal’s 9-year-old son got the other. Managed to boat both of them for the first bill for each of us! Yes, both were brought aboard for a photo op, and both were returned safely to the ocean. No size to them, but hey, a bill is a bill. I’ll post pics when I get them.
Wind kicked up pretty badly at around 2:00, so we beat our way back in a washing machine at about 20 knots. Still a great day… first time in 2+ years that I actually got to angle instead of drive.
Way to go Ryan. Did you take the plung at the dock?
I thought they’d get me, but little Hal took off with his mom, and I guess they forgot about me. I even hid my wallet and cellphone expecting it, but dodged the bullet.
Congrats on the fish Ryan. THAT was the boat I was watching that had some guy in the cockpit performing what looked like some kind of voodoo flexing ritual. That must have been you trying to apply sunscreen. Exactly how many people can fit up in the tower of that vessel anyway? I understand the sunscreen crowd has this new fangled spray on stuff now, though I am not sure if it has hit the Wal-mart $2 level yet. Even DG has the little padded back scratcher things for lotion application. I’m not into other guys touching or rubbing anything on my body, but that’s how I roll. Once again, congrats on the fish. Have you been in contact with DNR to get your Sailfish certificate yet?
Hey RocknRye. Been a while since I’ve seen you on the water, I think it was last year when you tried to take the B’liner to the hole. I am currently boatless, the ex took the boat and the dog during the D. I’ll have to agree with you on the burnt up in 10 minutes deal though, there’s skin on this body that hasn’t seen the sun since the old lady talked me into a naked fishing trip. Talk about a sight that would blind the seeing, that would have been the Ex-Mrs in the sunlight. Somethings are better kept in the dark. That spf 15 stuff caused me to burn my bald head and it matted up my chest hairs something fierce. That wasn’t the worst part though, took a big bull tail whip to the nards then the son of a gun bit me on the inner thigh(4 stitches to fixed that, remind me to show you the scar), and to top it all off my dang shorts blew out sometime during the ride home. Since then everytime I go near a boat I have to tie a string to junior so I can find him to take a leak. I don’t have to worry about a sunburned nothing anymore because I am fully clothed from head to toe. BTW - I am in the market for a new ex and boat, if you see any possible leads let me know.
D. Monkey - you just made me shoot Diet Coke out of my nose all over myself. I’ve got kids taking exams in here that are now rolling on the floor laughing as well. Thanks for the laugh - now i hope i dont get fired.

“The monkey made me do it.”
I don’t take my shirt off anymore out there, I’m afraid the National Enquirer might fly out there to verify a siting of the Micheline Tire Man sippin’ on a cold Pabst Blue Ribbon. When I was younger and much slimmer I would try and get some sun, and I would ask the other guys to rub lotion on my back so I wouldn’t get sunburned, but they would all scream “no way, ahhhhhh!!” and then run to other parts of the boat, what was up with that, I don’t get it?
MICrabber, sounds like you are describing the ex(just missed the B part). She had the same affect on people. It’s a shame what a couple of years and two little words can do to a person.
Hey Monkey. Long time no see. Sorry to hear about the big D (I don’t mean Dallas). I know you’ll miss that dog. Who got the IROC? That is still a sweet ride, I don’t care if it is up on blocks.
I traded the old bayliner for a sweet 16 Glassmaster. Come fall those murrells inlet spots won’t know what hit’em. I been talking to a few guys on here that say I can take the new boat out to the georgetown hole. They say if I pick my days and take a buddy boat, I should be fine. When do you want to go?
