good day 7/3 late report (pics added)

We headed out on a friends boat from the Wando river. Cleared the Jetties around 5:15. It was a great day on the water … actually we could have used a little more breeze. We went striaght off fished in 200-240 all day and the hot lures were: blue and white islander, green jet head with teaser squid, and some crazy rig that the captain dreamed up with 18 swivels, 2ft of wire leader, a red skirt and a hook… “whatever, it worked”.

Fishing was steady for several hours early. first 10 minutes had on a white that jumped twice and that was once too many times, then before we could get three baits back out we had a 63 lb wahoo screem off some line and then 40 minutes later found its way into the fishbox. The fish was too long to fit so I cut off the last 18 inches and made wahoo sushi for the captain and crew. That was a personal best for the captain that also doubled as the angler. Next up was a 14 year old Rookie with his personal best tuna. Next up was another Rookie with his personal best Mahi at 23lbs. We put a couple of slingers in the box for good measure. Started tolling away from the parking lot of boats… (must have been 25 boats in 1 square mile) and after a couple of slow hours we had a nice blue come up in the teaser. He was lit up and showed us his shoulders as he checked out the baits… Well we were slow and he was fast because we did not put a hook in him.

All in all a great day with some great friends.

We did pick up a kid (14) on the dock. He hangs out there fishing from the dock. He volunteered to be “mate” on the trip and learn as much as he could. After we checked with his Mom he was in. It was a great pleasure to introduce someone to this great sport and be able to trade some knowledge for not having to walk so far to the cooler. I am sure he will remember his first tuna and first dolphin for many years. Great Job Austin you were a great add to our trip!!!

austin is a good kid, i’m glad you were able to take him. He hangs out at Barton and Burwell all the time and is always respectful

good job on raising some bills to the top

Congrats on the great day. I’m pretty sure I met you guys on the dock when y’all came back. Hobcaw, I believe? Austin is a great kid and congrats on introducing him to the sea.

thanks for stopping by. He is a great kid and very respectfull and pleaseant to be around. He has more energy than the rest of us combined. he was great … helped with crew duties and absolutely helped clean up when we got back.

I hope that you gave Austin some numbers! He can share those with his “up-country” cousins the next time we’re down. My son and I had Austin “guide” for us a couple of weeks ago when the weather forced us to stay in-shore. Even though we din’t catch anything, Austin volunteered to clean up our boat for us.

If you’re reading this “Hobcawboy” remember I promised to take you shrimping when you’re 16!

The first step in a 12 step program is admitting you have a problem . . .

. . . Then I’m on the road to recovery!

Good Times, That’s a crew…Austin is good people…I’ll let his parents now he picked a good crowd to go with…Here’s the pics enlarged…

Great Lord man! Time has not been a friend to the Wando class of '89. Believe it or not ladies and gentlemen, I know for a fact that three of the four of those old guys in the pictures used to run this town wide a$$ open. Let this be a lesson to all you young kids out there. If you run too hard, too fast for too long time will not be kind to you either! Congrats on your day guys. You couldn’t have had a bad time with that all star crew!

You can’t buy class like that…not even with a paeso.

I call BS on the weight…It’s hard to hang one without a tail. I see Gawrych managed to get in the picture without actually getting his fingers dirty.

…you’re probably right. It probably went more like this.

SS “That’s a 70lb fish!”
BG “Nah it’s 75-80!”
PO “BS that thing is 50”
BG “Alright let’s call it 60-65”
RC “Nah, nobody will believe that, but if we give it an odd number like 63 nobody will question it”

As far as BG not getting his fingers dirty…if you look at his right hand where they’re holding up the wahoo I think he is “pinky checking” it to see if it’s male or female. Typicaly only a practice done on gators but BG has been known to try it on all kinds of stuff.

so you cant weigh a fish without a tail?

not unless they duct taped the tail on somewhere. I doubt they hung the toothy end, the tail piece, then added the two together.

austin learned quickly from BG…when I went by the dock he was watching PO wash the boat. I don’t know if he saw the 9-3 hookset technique.
