Had a nice morning with numerous hookups over 10-50 feet of water with freelines, planers, and cork! Caught a few on downrods but no keepers. All in all, I boxed a limit of 23-27 inchers. Around 1ish, I headed back to the Acapulco area to pick up Spoonmaster and introduced him to board pulling. There in the cove, we made a 30 minute pull and picked up a 6 pounder-- Spoon’s first planer board fish:smiley: About out of bait and marking a bunch of perch, we got lines in, spotlocked, and jerked up around 25 perch in the last 45 minutes of the day… Good times!!
Also, if you have been catching perch in a specific place, try fishing for them even if you aren’t marking them. I’ve caught a bunch of perch on good spots doing this. Sometimes they seem to be almost dormant, holding on the bottom, but after catching a few the whole school will show up on the screen. Once you ever get them turned on they will usually bite very quickly. Watch for the gulls too, if you are striper fishing and not getting bit, try the spoons for perch under the gulls. Finally, if you throw back a small perch that floats, prepare to be swamped by the striper chasers when the gulls start diving trying to pick up the perch!!! It’s almost comical watching them casting to the little perch, except for the box waves created by a bunch of boats!!!
Fished with an old friend this morning. Had fun (NOT) trying to get across the mud with rods, lifejackets, deep cycle battery, etc. without slipping. Didn’t put the depthfinder on the toon boat today. Still managed to locate and catch over 30 perch on the Berry spoons. Tried several other spoons. Hopkins, Cotton Cordell, etc. Caught almost every fish on the Berrys. Hooked one big catfish. Played it for a good while and lost it about 5’ from the boat. Got slime all over my line and spoon. Most fish we caught were between 22’ and 30’ deep. They seemed to be moving around a lot today. Quit around 11:30 when the rain threatened to start.
We fished the MSC tournament today and finished 4th. We also had the big fish with one a little over 9#. The wind made it tough at times, but the hard rain held off until the end of the day.
