So, with this weather, and absolutely nothing to do today… It is a prime day to tie some up… Anyone got any ideas of things to be tyin up for the upcoming cold months… already got a few spun this morning… just lookin for some different ideas…
Whatcha targeting?
Guess that would help , huh? lol. Ol grass bass. Tied up a few new patterns, alot of brown marabou, seems like that is a safe bet in the winter. few deep water clousers etc… pretty much redfish, but when they aint hot, I’ve been known to treat the main channel comin into the inlet like a big trout stream, long leader, heavy fly, cast long and “upstream” dead drift down…

M4 (Mad Mikes Mud Minnow) works on 'em both… great fly… besides that I have a box full of clousers for the winter… brown and white sems to be working right now…

Nikon. I agree. M4’s are downright nasty lookin fly’s. Maybe I picked up the heavier of the varietys but that dadgum thing feels like a brick on the end of my 9wt. I cant cast it very far and if i do, it flops… however, great fly. lol. I have heard that in the winter, natural darker colors are the ol standby. I pumped out a few new redfish patterns, and some new trout flies, tied a few streamers, those big deep pools up there on the Chatooga DH, sure did look good last week, I beleive i will pay ol tooga another visit over X-mas break.

M4’s are a very versatile fly… I tie them up smaller when needed and longer as well… All the ones I bought threw fine on my 8wt or 10wt and the only “heavy” flies I have thrown are the ones I tied at first and tweaked til I got 'em right… I tell ya even in Iraq I had fish nailing it… so far besides the Clouser it is the go to fly. I have noticed the same thing, darker colors work better in winter. I usally tie up a lot of all black clousers and all dark browns about this time of year, it’s funny though… by sroing time I won;t have any left and I don;t break off many clousers I have also tried a M4 in black to see how it works… Now it looks like the M4 I carry at work

Regular ol comedian i tell ya. lol. I will have you know sir, that I cut that very same leader back to about 6 ft. tied about another 3 ft. of 20# flouro via surgeons knot. and I am still using that very same leader and have not lost one yet! lol. Last weekend when i went home for turkey break, I stopped by sportsmans warehouse and they had all their tyin stuff 40% off. so needless to say I loaded, got a huge cape for like 7 dollars. got some black zonkers, so I may conceive some black magic per say. and talkin about catchin fish on the M4 in Iraq, it is no suprise, I would be willing to go as far to say with diff. hook sizes you could probably catch anything from browns and bows to a dadgum tarpon… ( Mike is feelin about 10ft. tall hearin this ) its just a overall good fly. My only issue is I am too dang stubborn to fish any fly I didnt tie, however, If I see them hit somethin I didnt tie… well, thats a no brainer.
