Had a friend ask for some help with filling his box for an upcoming trip to Montana so he didn’t have to pay $3 for midges. So we headed to the fly shop picked up some materials. Thanks to Lowcountry Fly Shop for carrying freshwater materials that aren’t needed in saltwater, although I guess you could catch a mud minnow on some sz 16 scud hooks. We got the materials which included some tiny 16s, some bead heads, some thread, and some Blue Moon … then we tied …
Good way to start the day off before heading to the Fly Fishing Film Tour.
Good luck in Montana

Bart I have been tying for 7 years, being proficent at it is going to be an opinionated question haha. I tied fresh for about about 3 years been tying salt for almost 4 now. Those patterns above are actually pretty easy ties just dubbing, thread, hook, and a bead head. If you want to learn Bart, I will be glad to show you, but if you learn I am not responsible for any of your extravagant material purchases that will occur haha. I have a large enough setup where I am lucky enough to have plenty of room.

yea since when is a 16 tiny?? Just kiddin around with ya (folks seem a bit edgy on the board these days>) but i’d take Hokie’s advice and at least grab a few 20’s n 22’s
Not being edgy, just giving some advice so everyone can keep getting better! I guided on a very difficult river in Colorado where the midges were tiny, 20s-24s. Hurricane’s flies look good and would work on that river, just earlier in the year as the fish would take them as caddis. Midges are TINY, sometimes you can just use thread for the body and a tiny bit of dubbing as a head and you are good to go. All of August and Sept we would fish 20s and 22s. I fished the Gallatin once and got one fish, it can be a tough river and I’m no expert on it, these flies may kick ass. Generally this time of the year the I’d suggest using midges smaller than 16 though.
Hurricane, I do really like using glass beads on my nymphs and midges and the multi-colored flies are a neat touch. Blue is a great go to color for rainbows when nothing else is working by the way. The SJW’s will definitely work, particularly if there is some runoff or discolored water anywhere. Nice job
He’s still out is Montana, he said he has done well so far, he just told me what he wanted to use and I tied them up haha (he helped) and 16 is tiny compared to a 1,2,4 my normal saltwater ties, I got some 26’s last time I was in Asheville, I am going to play with those soon

Yeah… the word midge means #20 or smaller… considering midges don’t get any bigger than that naturally… what you have there are weird colored nymphs… “atractor” nymphs if you will, but not midges… also if you make the thread under body a little smoother the wire will lay down more evenly… just a tip… I’m sure fish out west would eat them, they use alot of flashy nondescript nymphs out there like rainbow warriors, ice cream cones and such… as long as you had fun I guess thats all that matters…
Still here. Fished Monday caught 8, 7 were bows and 1 white fish. Fished Wednesday afternoon and caught 18 mostly bows. Threw streamers yesterday an landed three browns. Fishing all day today before heading back tomorrow.
