Great board you guys have here. I’ve read your board for quite awhile, but since I’ve not fished down your way, I’ve not had anything to contribute. Therefore, I hate to have my first post be a question, but here goes.
Each year, our family takes a beach vacation. Seeing how everyone has different interests, I try to find a place that allows some of us to fish and crab, while the beach lovers get to spend time in the sand and soak up the sun. Normally, we go to Sunset, Ocean Isle, or Holden Beach in NC. We get a house that is a short walk to the beach, but on a canal to allow us to keep the 17’skiff in the water. With the grandkids getting older, I’m considering something closer to Myrtle Beach that will offer more amusement type entertainment. With that said, I don’t like staying in Myrtle Beach, but would like to be close enough to take advantage of what they have to offer.
I’ve looked at Garden City and Pawley’s Island on the WEB and see that they offer canal homes that are reasonably close to the beach. Though great fishing is not top priority on these trips, we like to have the chance to fish for inshore/nearshore species while the beach lovers are baking in the sun.
Anyone one have any suggestions or recommendations as to where I can find such a place. I’m looking to rent for a week at a time.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Good Fishing!!!
I would even consider staying up in the Cherry Grove area. If you have aboat, there is a landing in CG that puts into Hog Inlet. Some fishing and you can beach it for those that want some beach time. Quite a few canal homes and you have all the rest of MB just south. Garden City and Pawley’s are nice as well. Don’t blame you about MB, I refuse to stay in MB myself. Good Luck, have fun and spend lots of $.

I would also second the suggestion of Cherry Grove. Although the canals aren’t very good at low tide, they need dredging, the main channels are good. As DFreedom pointed out there is a boat landing at 53rd Avenue that puts you into the marsh for good fishing or you can go over to the island for some nice beach. There are also boat ramps for the ICW just a few minutes away. Plus, the beach at Cherry Grove cannot be beat.

Stayed in garden city last 8 years with extended family. Great family beach with a small “boardwalk” area that is fun for kids. Some canals are shallow but most are fine at all tides. Can boat to murrells inlet for dinner or to watch the goats! Also bait shop on the water which is convenient. I can send you recommendations on spots to fish if you end up going in that direction. There is a public boat ramp and many of the houses have ramps.
We have been going to Garden City for 15 years and staying on the Inlet. We fish and crab and love it. I finally got a boat I can go offshore with and even though we didnt get to go this year because of weather we caught some reds like this one

some flounder and some

we caught enough to make some

We also spend a week at Edisto, and we havent gone yet this year. WE will be there starting next Sunday and will be fishing in the Billfish tourney. Looking forward to that. The fishing is better there and the crabbing too. But Garden City has the pier, bar and games for the kiddos plus the inlaws pay for the house.
Course with beer, sand, sun, radio and family you cant go wrong.

Thanks for all the ideas. It’s nice to have so many options.
Good Fishing!!!
You should check out Surfside beach. It is a bit North Of Garden city but way better. The Garden city pier is not really a Pier for fish but one for entertainment. The Surfside pier is a Fishing pier, I know this because my ole man drew the plans for it and that summer I worked with his crew to build it. The cool thing about the Surfside pier, there is abit of the structure left from the old pier that was left by Hugo and some left by the crappy pier that was built right after Hugo that didn’t last very long,And on top of that Reef balls were dropped too at the end after we were done. I would fish there during my lunch break while we were building it and hook onto Cobia,Sheephead, and black drum. It’s a great place and a family type beach. and not too far from the amusements of Garden city. Fish the Left side the most of the reef balls are on the right, but for some reason I would always catch the most fish off the left.
