I grew up in TX and until I moved to GA I had never heard of shrimp and grits. I thought shrimp was for lunch and dinner, and grits were for breakfast. I know better now. SnG is one of my favorite dishes.
What is something “weird” that you’ve tried that turned out to be really good? Besides shrimp and grits, here is mine: my aunt likes to pour her gumbo over potato salad. I like gumbo and I like potato salad, so I gave it a try and it is really good.
What’s your favorite good and weird food?
If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
Macaroni salad in gumbo is stupid good. I used to eat potato salad with gumbo and fried eggs for breakfast a lot. Now I eat cereal for obvious health reasons. Turnip slaw is really good. I have eaten pig eyeballs. They are good with salt if they are hot. Really gross cold.
Gas station cheeseburger in Australia “hold the onions” had beets, avacado and a fried egg on top of it. It was good.
Sashimi anything, except squid.
Bar-b-que freshwater eel, unagi I think it is, is fantastic. I’ve only thrown up once because of poor quality, but I’ve eaten it a lot, not so much since the parking lot puking.
On the other hand…
Sea urchin roe in Japan = doody bubbles popping in your mouth
Japanese sea weed cookie, followed by Dr Pepper also terrible during and for hours afterwards
Turnip slaw sounds pretty good actually. I go to a little Mediterranean cafe for lunch sometimes and they put pickled turnips on the schwarma wrap. They are really good.
If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
May not be real weird, but I love cold fried fish for breakfast. I know what you’re thinking…

ive tried stingray and liked it and also been tricked into rocky mountain pork oysters. some of the wierd ones served at game feeds back home were beaver, muskrat, raccoon, groundhog… ill also try sushi just about anything and although i didnt wanna spend $45 for the whole challenge for a bandana aand a bow…i survived eating the #10 spicy tuna roll at bushidos
Cold pizza for breakfast is the best. Tried a brined and baked raccoon for the first time last week and it wasn’t half bad. I made a bear chili for a local chili cook off Saturday and came in second place. The winner was a combination of buffalo and quail. I’ve got to step it up next year.
As I read it, I thought raw horse = Japan.
I turned horse down there and also refused raw chicken. I explained that I was taught every day of my life to run from raw chicken and wasn’t going to “just try it” in front of a bunch of snickering Japanese men.
Just this week I’ve been eating (for breakfast) an egg quiche sandwich (mostly eggs, a little cheese, baked in a thick layer) topped with caramelized onions, some mayo, and a little spicy mustard.
Tastes great to me but my coworkers want to strangle me. Problem is, they can’t catch their breath to chase me.

I saw a ‘No Reservations’ episode with Anthony Bourdain that was shot in Japan. He ate raw chicken and talked about how the chicken was raised and processed made it OK to eat. He also said that if you were in New York and knew the right people, you could get it there if you were willing to spend the money (very expensive). But…NOT ME!</font id=“size4”>

quote:Sweetbreads or ris are culinary names for the thymus (also called throat, gullet, or neck sweetbread) or the pancreas (also called heart, stomach, or belly sweetbread) especially of the calf (ris de veau) and lamb (ris d'agneau) (although beef and pork sweetbreads are also eaten).[1] Various other glands used as food are also called 'sweetbreads', including the parotid gland ("cheek" or "ear" sweetbread), the sublingual glands ("tongue" sweetbreads or "throat bread"), and testicles (cf. Rocky Mountain oyster)or Lamb Fries.[2][3] The "heart" sweetbreads are more spherical in shape, and surrounded symmetrically by the "throat" sweetbreads, which are more cylindrical in shape.
