I haven’t done much freshwater fishing besides one trip out to GCR on the kayak. It consisted of catching several blue gill and some close encounters with several alligators. I was wondering when the crappie start hitting and when the alligators go to sleep lol. What do you guys use for bait for crappie? I have a good ff so I should be able to find them suspended. Thanks for any input!

I find November to be the start of Crappie season and the gators to go night night. But, with this weather change fishing has been erratic and fish have been biting earlier than i can remember. I use crappie minnows on a chartreuse jig and black and green slider . And when i want to relax and enjoy nature i go late in the evenings and fish through the night with a lighter bobber.
Do they bite in the daytime where you are fishing? All the crappie fishing I do is daytime only. I went Saturday and Sunday Labor day weekend and caught 128 then went back the next Saturday and got 60. It has been windy since.
I have never caught crappie in the daytime at GCR some people have said they caught crappit early mornings but not through the day. I think the water is nit deep enough.
I’m from PA and we fished for them in the middle of the day under big bridges and they were suspended in about 15 to 20 feet of water. I was wondering how people catch them at GCR. I’ve heard some people just cast minnows along the grass edges. I’ve only been out to GCR once and caught a few bluegill.

Went out wednesday and the wind was terrible. Had a few hits but didn’t land anything. Covered a lot of water too. I was using live minnows and live crickets.

I have caught crappie in the GCR on small beetle spins with black and chartreuse grubs. Sometimes I just use a small jig head and reel it back real slow. If you can find a good spot and sit on top of it you can drop a bettle spin down and just jig it up and down. Never fished for them at night because the wife wouldn’t let me take the kids at night. Anything with a chartreuse tail works good. Most people use minnows or shiners under a float.
