I know this is a striper forum but thought I would post this here since most everybody that posts here fishes the lakes. I was talking to the DNR guys yesterday and if you are planning on hunting the early goose season on the lakes DNR has bought a bunch of lazer rangefinders to check the distance from you to the closest residences. In lex/richland counties you have to be 350 yds. from any residence and saluda/newberry you have to be 250 yds. Just thought I would pass this along. As far as tresspassing, as long as you stay in the boat your not tresspassing. Also you can hunt from the islands out of the boat except for the one that has a structure on it. Not sure of the name.
Leave it to the DNR to figure out a way to bust someone hunting 345 yds away, whoops, 5 yds to close. It takes the fun out of it. I cant have any fun for worrying what rule I might be breaking. You Should see the Game Wardens go after the Dove hunters at noon Labor day. It’s sick I tell ya, Sick.
Hey when we freeline during Dec/Jan we ALWAYS keep a shotgun in the boat. Sometimes those geese get a little too close to pass up and we “surprise” them:smiley:
I am glad they do not have anything like that on Hartwell, we try not too shoot when we are close to houses
haha…that’s great. Unfortunately, living on Hartwell I’ll have hold off for some ducks and dove on the farm. I definently wouldn’t mind bringing home some cats and geese in the same boat.
jsauls1,
I killed a few on Murray last week. Will be going again this weekend. How did you clean yours? I just cut the breast halves out. A buddy who is a longtime up north duck and geese hunter told me that that’s the only way to clean them. I was going to pluck it and cook it like a turkey but it ain’t that kind of bird. I cut some of the breast up, marinated it in teriyaki and stir fried it in olive oil with onions and mushrooms and it was fantastic. The breast meat looks almost like deer meat its so red.
Don’t waste your time plucking those birds. The only way to eat them is cut the breast out and make sure you don’t over cook it. We cut the breast in 1" thick strips marinade in Dale’s (or whatever marinade you like) and grill until it is about medium. It is all good eats then. If you bake it like a turkey you might as well eat the pan you cook it in, it will taste better.
Muzzy,
I’ll have to try grilling them. Sounds good. We were hunting this morning, had the decoys out and setup before daybreak. About 07:30 this guy pulls up in front of our decoys in a johnboat and starts fishing. We let him know we are goose hunting in the area and he says “I don’t give a ■■■■, I’m fishing right here”! Now just about everyone I’ve met on the lake except for some drunks have been super people and wouldn’t have done that. We were afraid if any birds flew in we would hit or at least pepper him. Besides being really stupid isn’t it against the law to interfere with people waterfowl hunting?
kloudking; yes it is . you needed to get his boat number and turn his dumb ass in. i believe i would have had to fire off a cap or two also. heard you took my buddy dragonmouse dove shooting. if you have room sometime please let me know. i am on the shoot and release program for birds.
A couple of buddies had the same thing hapen to them last week, except these guys would start yelling at the geese when they were coming into the decoys. Some people have no respect for others, that is the only reason I sometimes regret hunting on public land or a lake because of people like that. They give hunters and fishermen alike a bad name.
Coolbreeze,
I think blue wing teal comes in this weekend. I know a good spot, saw a buch of them flying around. We can shoot geese and teal. Dragonmouse is a very nice guy and has a great family too. I enjoyed hunting with him. I hope he fills the boat up with shrimp this weekend.
Muzzy, I don’t want any kind of conflict with fisherman. The guy had the whole 40 mile lake to fish yet he wanted to mess us up. I will call the game warden next time. I expect to get the answer “he’s got just as much right to fish there as you do hunt, and if you shoot and pelt him you are setting yourself up for a lawsuit”. I figure thats what they will say but we’ll see! I was hunting on one of the islands last week and people would come up, thought the decoys were real or something. Guess they were going to feed them with bread or something LOL! Anyway when we came out of the woods and told them we were hunting they were like Oh! Ok Sorry! No problem with people like that but this other guy is lucky no birds flew in because we were planning on shooting anyway! I don’t think people like hunters shooting out on the lake.
Seems crazy to mess with someone you know has a gun. I am not saying you would endanger anyone, but some other a-hole would. With the number of idiots on the increase he is going to eventually do this to someone who is as dumb as he is and get himself hurt.
Coolbreeze, if you ever need a shrimping partner I will tow the boat. i dont know much about shrimping but can usually open up the net and can control the boat.
steelytom; i do not need for you to throw the net. i would rather do that than drive the boat. what i really need you for is to hand the captain a beer when called upon. i am going tommorrow with ray and another buddy. we are just going to shrimp 3-4 hrs. because ray has to be back. i just need a fix so i am going. will get in touch with you maybe next week. i will be in charleston and might just have you bring my boat down with you.
I could shoot them flying over my house every morning! My neighbor wouldn’t mind but I’m sure I have a tree-hugger in the neighborhood somewhere that would whine.
Dilly Dally just in case you didn’t know dove season is over (at least I am almost positive it is) until the week of Thanksgiving. Just wanted to let you know.
Dude…went to Manchester Saturday (Bland 2 field). I only shot 6 times, but my boy got to shoot some and my buddy knocked down 3. I was in the wrong spot and there was no one out there, but by the time I figured out the birds weren’t going to come where I was sitting, it was time to go. I could have ended up with close to my limit if I’d have been half way down the field instead of at the other end. That’s life, eh? I’ve never hunted out there 2nd season before, and won’t be able to go again 'til 3rd season. Live and learn.
C’mon guys, I need to crack a few more birds this year. We need to line up a shoot for the 3rd season.
DD, call me.
Breeze…we still going shrimping tomorrow to use up some of your leftover bait?
Why is it that people are allowed to read a Bible in Jail, but not in School???
