Awww yes. That’s my home away from home. Worked there at that plant for 29 years. Seen those locks pumped dry, so we could work on the valves and gates a half dozen times at least. Left there 3 years ago. Kinda miss it. I still think it’s an engineering marvel!

Every boater in the SC area needs to experience this at some point. It’s amazing, man’s achievements, if you stop to truly think about it.
I’ll never forget doing this with my dad and uncles probably 25 years ago now and having a small gator take the ride up with us. Good times and great memories. Thanks for posting this.
May all your favorite bands stay together…
It really is amazing. Can’t imagine building it. I made the trip as a kid from Santee to Charleston with my Dad. Now I go a couple times a year from Charleston to I95 bridge since my Mom is there. Beautiful ride. I saved my track this time from Leed’s Ave to the 95 bridge in gpx and kml if anyone wants it.

Quite a few years ago my bride and I went from the lake to the tail race to fish and happened to have mutual friends in Darlington with the guy operating the locks. it was early morning and i just asked if anybody ever got to fish in them and he said not really but since it was early and nobody else in there have at it. we caught several really nice cats in the few minutes that we had to fish. it was an experience that wife will never forget and same here. have done the locks many times but never got to fish like that again. a very nice memory.
When we dewatered the locks for maintenance we always had big catfish and huge largemouth bass in there. Oh yeah, if your ever in the locks and a manatee gets in there, they like beer! I saw one keep coming up beside a boat cause the guy kept pouring beer in its mouth. Beat anything I ever saw. Also, if a manatee is spotted close to, or in the locks, they will not operate them to lake level. We try to avoid them getting in the lake. They won’t survive the winter in there.
