Got my first Gator Tag Zone 1

Need a little advice on where to find gators, I am a complete newb. I cant even spell gator. could someone tell me where is a good place to look for some biguns. My grandson and son are dying to go. Just looking for general area.

Some great information can be found in the hunting report section of this site. Search reports from gator season 2012 and you should pick up a ton of hints and tips on everything from where to go to techniques in harvesting your alligator.

As far as finding a big one, the more scouting you do, the better it will pay off. Gators are territorial and will return to their homes. Find several that you would like to harvest on your scouting trips and then when it comes time to hunt, you’ll have multiple options and come out successful.

Good luck.

This was my first year applying and I didn’t get picked. How many years have you applied?

What area is Zone 1? I suppose I could go back to the DNR site and find out, but…

it looks like 3 years is about when most people get it. some on there second

Unit 1 is lower coastal. We harvested one there two years ago. ashepoo and near the ace basin are good spots

Put in the Ashley at Jessen early AM - head down river towards Middleton, look at the points of every corner and in front of/around the rice patties at Middleton. Plenty o gators to be had… 10’+ all over the place.

I just moved to a place in between Magnolia and Middleton Plantations. Took my first ride out there last Sunday and saw plenty of slides coming out of the old rice plantations.

super cool , thanks for the information, I started a thread in the hunting secion but nobody offered any suggestions on areas to hunt. I am going to see if I can locate those areas on google earth and get oriented.

I am thinking maybe scouting that area , have to see how the weekend weather goes. We love to fish edisto and put in there at the bridge, however that is zone 2 or right on the edge and I would hate to get a gator in zone 1 and be stopped by dnr pulling my boat out in zone 2. I am sure they would ticket me as if I caught it in the wrong zone. Anyone know another landing slighlty south?

Bennett’s point is right off of the ashepoo. Good public landing that you don’t have to worry about leaving your stuff at night.

It’s a bit tricky to tell the boundaries from that map, but there is a solid heard of gators where Alligator Creek meets the Edisto, and a little overgrown island (GPS: +32 38’ 52.50", -80 23’ 32.38"). I take family (from the Midwest) there, when I want to scare the crap out of them. Good times…

Anyway, there is not much for landings, south of the Hwy 174/Edisto bridge. Might have to run to the Docksite Road landing, on the south end of Edisto (not sure if this is even public access any more). Not a bad run, but not as nice as the Hwy 174 bridge, either.

Happy hunting, and share pics, if you get one.

PS: If a fly lost it’s wings, would it be called a walk?

Awesome , thanks man. I will try to cull the heard.
