Yep, my buddy Derek and I took our oldest sons for a few hours yesterday am and got skunked. We did have 2 knockdowns, but they were short strikes, and the way the minnows were mashed tells me it was redfish. No flounder bites whatsoever. Now, the wind was howling and we couldn’t find the nice bait that we needed, and the 1’2" mullet just didn’t do the trick. I’ve found over the past few years that it takes those 4-6" mullet to do much good this time of year. But, the boys had fun. We rode around, towed a boat that ran out of gas to safety, ate some pb&j’s and just had a good time. The fish would have just been a bonus anyways. Hope y’all did better than us on the fish if you got to go!
If you get in that bait situation again find a sandbar or stretch of sand and catch tiger minnows. My go to bait for flounder this time of year, they’re like flounder candy.
I tailed in behind you on Hwy 22 yesterday, atleast I think it was you. All I could think was, man I wish I was goin’ fishin’
18’ Hewes Bayfisher/115 4 Stroke Yamaha/6’Powerpole, etc
billymac, we usually have the bait we need at the bait hole, but we couldn’t see them with all the wind. We didn’t even try to go out to the sandbars because we had the kids and figured it would be really rough. I’ve found that flounder like tiger minnnows on the sand bottoms like around the jetties, and mullet around the shellbanks and mudflats. At least that was the ticket last year. I’ll keep that in mind for next time, though. Goob, it probably was us. Black GMC pulling the boat? Let me know when you’re gonna get out. We need to get that trip in we’ve been talking about for 3 years.
Hard to see anything when the winds howling.I like the tigers because they have some size to them verses a lot of mud minnows you get.you may be on to something about the sandy bottoms,I usually fish Tubbs inlet in may and june then move out to the jetties and nearshore reefs when the water gets hot.
Yeah, actually, I found that out by coincidence last year. We had fished up on the mud and was almost out of bait when it was time to troll the sandbars. I went up and caught some good sized tigers and they were what the fish bit. We only caught 1 on mullet. I don’t use mud minnows after May unless they I catch them in the net while throwing on shrimp and finger mullet because USUALLY we can find decent finger mullet or the tigers. Again, thanks for the reminder on that. I wish I had thought of that when we had the boys out. You live you learn, I guess!
