It’s that time of year again when I just can’t pass up a chance to fish, so when I saw there might be a window Monday I couldn’t pass it up. So, I called up Mr. Trigger to see if he could make it and SeaSkiff89, “Mr. Catch and Release”. The plan was for a quick, early trip because I had to work that night. We had the boat wet and leaving the dock by 5am. Nice ride out as we dodged cargo ships and shooting stars on the way out. In no time, we were sitting where we had picked out to try today. As the sun creeped up, we watched Ajs crash on bait which looked like small bonita. So, with water temps in the upper 70s, we started chunking plugs and jigging. The bite ended quickly as the Ajs disappeared with the “bait”, but not before a few Ajs were let go with sore lips. We continued to work some newer stuff when I get rocked on my on my new Spheros/Trevalla S set-up that Josh with Southern Drawl hooked me up with. A few minutes later a fat cobia lay in the boat, seduced by the sparkle of the jig! We continued to work the area, trying to learn what we could. Luckily, a few snapper liked our jigs as well as the usual suspects. Lines in at noon and racing back in to the ramp. Thanks D and Blanding for tagging along and having the patience to try something different with me. Overall, another safe trip that we were blessed with, including a total fuel burn of 18 gallons!
Got2Go doin his best “cobefacekillah” impression:
I gaffed that fish, about all I contributed all day [:0]
Blanding getting his first taste of a reef donkey rodeo:
We stopped by the 60 on the way in and found a football size school of cigar minnows everywhere. Tried to entice a bite by throwing all kinds of artificials. I was throwing a rattle trap on a trout rod hoping to get a Spanish when a 15 pound aj took a run at it, but failed to hookup… man that would have been interesting! Lots of life in the ocean, rips everywhere with weeds and tons of bait hiding underneath… the birds were certainly having a great day!

How come my boat doesn’t catch as many cobia as yours? Nice work.

Yeah, I’d love to get some of those jigs you showed me! That’s a Yabbah jig or something like that by Williamson. And, yes, they catch a lot of fish. I’ve been amazed at the triggers, snapper, and all sorts of stuff that has been eating them.
