Got2Go...4/10/15 Trigger Smackdown II

After having only fished offshore twice since November, NorthChucky and I decided late last night to fish today. We figured that we better learn to fish in this wind since it never seems to stop blowing. Boat wet before sunrise and we eased on out. Started dropping jigs, but it seemed like the fish had lockjaw. We made a few moves and came across a massive school of suspended fish. We knew what fixing to happen…a trigger smackdown. We should have quit fishing by 11am, but we looked around for bottom while just relaxing and chilling. The ride home was, well, let’s just say, fun. All in all, we made it back safely with 40 fat triggers and an assortment of other goodies. Great trip to get things rolling as well as test out some new toys purchased over the last few months. On a side note, we dodged lots of flying fish coming and going in 90ft. Thanks D and I’ll be sharpening the knives Saturday for you…HA!

Trigger bite was unreal. We could have kept catching them all day. My freezer is empty no more!

Thanks again for the trip Andy. I’ll be looking forward to cleaning all those fish after work today lol!

Good job!

Being superstitious is bad luck.
Time and tide wait for no man.

are you getting the triggers with jigs??? what kind and are you using bait with them? sounds like a good trip…catch um up…Mike

Triggers will hit jigs often - but seldom get hooked in the mouth. When you set a hook in trigger skin - they stay hooked up.

Somebody’s going to be eating good.

Good trip! Sounds like some fine dining will be going on at the Hubler’s.

I have always done well on the pelagic but never on the trigger… ironically they are my favorite fish. Would be willing to supply a ride on the albe for educational purposes. Pm if interested.

Trust me, I’m no pro. Do a search on triggers on the site. I think last November Phin and Sellsfish posted the 1-2-3s on the how to’s. Combine that with Courtland, especially his posting of pics and you’ll get lots and lots of information. Courtland also has numerous videos on YouTube. Basically, it’s just trial and error to find your style and figure it out. I’ve just tried to listen to a few willing members on here that have shared a lot to so many. LISTEN TO THEM and say THANKS! One thing I do agree with is to go as light as you can. 4000 size spinning reels with 30lb braid and a medium to medium light Trevalla will catch a lot more fish in my opinion than the bigger stuff. Also, jigs work. The Kabura and Ichiban style slow jigging style and type jigs work.

Getting ready to chow down!

Derrick did you move? Those countertops look different form the mako pics you sent me from last year.
I Spent the weekend polishing aluminum on the boat and knocking off the pollen. We are ready to roll once the wind quits on the weekend.

If you want some real deal schooling sellsfish is the man for the job. I have a technique i use that works for me. Sharp knife, I use a dexter Russell, and a lot of patience. I don’t rush and make sure to keep my cleaning station clean. Lynn taught me a few years back and u still use that technique. Pierce the skin behind the eye with a poking motion, cut up towards the spine, then filet as normal. Def will wreak havoc on a poor quality knife. I’ve seen other techniques that may be faster but I’m comfortable with the way I do it. Check YouTube for some techniques if you want…
