Well, was planning on doing a little trolling today, but got a tip from a buddy that the spades were a biting. So, myself and good friends, Brian and Lars, headed out searching today for the new “Carolina Gold”. Didn’t have any luck finding jellyballs or menhaden this morning, but went out optimistically. First drop down, I get thumped on my jig only to lose the fish after a good fight. Then, Lars, hooks into something that manhandles him, too. So far, 0-2 and I am beginning to second guess myself. We make a slight move and re-anchor and the fun starts. First, a couple of nice cbass come in, followed by a nice, fat gag. Then, I land about a 3# spanish. Brian busts the the 8# fly rod out and starts to school some spanish in between catching some very nice spades. Oh, almost forgot about the 18# cobia caught on the fly rod[:0]! We lost two more cobia at the boat due to poor gaff jobs, but that’s the way it goes. We kept 34 spades and released ALOT of them after all the coolers were full. One of the best trips I’ve had in a long time…Spadefish, grouper, and cobia (yum.yum.yum.)! Get out there, be safe, and enjoy this fishing while you can.

Thanks for the trip. Had a blast and the cobia is just waiting for the grill. My arms are hurting tonight.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day. FISH 24/7---- 25 Grady w/ a couple of Gas Guzzling 175 Johnsons “O-SEA-D” the old “Havanadaydream”
BW2150, I promised I wouldn’t disclose the area I fished to my buddy that pointed me in the right direction. All I can say is I would fish in between 40-60’ from Georgetown to Kiawah. I think all the reefs are getting covered up by them now! Good luck.

Do you mind sharing what types of bait you were using in the absense of not finding the jellyballs. I’m going tomorrow and have never caught a spade but would absolutely love to have some success.
