The plan yesterday was to meet up with an old friend and life long fishing buddy. We were going to try for some cobia, maybe some spades, and then bottom fish. Well, we arrived at the landing with more rods, coolers, and ice than I can remember. Shortly after, we had 20+ jelly balls and 60 frisky menhaden…things are going well, almost too well. Arrived at the area and looked around and around until things were looking fishy. On my first drop, I tighten up on something big. A few minutes later we put our first cobia in the boat, a solid 20# fish. The next few hours were some of the best fishing I have ever experienced. By 11am, we were wore out from cobia and jumbo redfish. We had a gaff hooked ripped off from a jumbo cobia,
, and just plain wore out wrestling the cobia in the boat with gloves and an inshore net,
. Catch and release cobia fishing, go figure…
. So, with our limit of brownies in the coolers, we moved on to the spades. They were spooky and finicky, but the light tackle did the job just fine with them until we tired of catching them. For whatever reason, I wanted to keep going as my buddy and I don’t fish much anymore. Looking at the ocean, I opted to run out and scout some new bottom area. We made great time, running almost 35mph in the ‘ol Got2Go. After a little time, we found a small patch of bottom that was looking good. The bliners, pinkies, and jumbo cbass confirmed it. The surprise of the day was the 35# cobia that we caught and released,[:0], while bottom fishing. We headed in to beat the storms as both of us knew we had just experienced an epic day of fishing. Ran in at almost 40mph to make it back at the landing at 5:30pm. Sorry for no pics, but my camera man and trigger catcher, Mr. Keys, was stuck working. Get out there, anywhere from 40-90’ of water and catch some fish right now. If I can get lucky, anyone can, Lord willing!
