Gotta Question for the Experts

How would a 10wt large arbor do on an 11 or 12wt rod?

not to good.
unless you have the worlds best drag, it ain’t gonna work.

chris.

In general, sure. Why not? Very few people around here are going to be pulling in a lot of fish that would require a 11 or 12 weight reel. If the balance works for you, use it. I am assuming you are doing this because of some limit of coin or other restriction?

I’ve use a 7wt reel on 9wt rods plenty of times. NEVER had a problem.

How 'bout some specifics? What reel and what are you targeting?

The main problem I see is your backing capacity. But, whether or not that is a problem is dependent on what you’re targeting.

if you are going after off shore feesh… you won’t be able to put enough backing on there. I am in the same boat… I have a 12wt rod but no reel… All the guys I have talked to said if I wanna way over gun reds wiht a 12wt then a smaller reel is good but if I want to go after tuna, and such, I need the right reel that will hold the backing I’ll need.

I have a Pflueger Trion 10 WT large arbor with 300 yards of backing on it. I have already caught Dolphin and Cobia on the combo and I was thinking I may target a Sail this summer. The reel seems to be holding up very well. iFly your are correct the limit of coin right now has me asking this question. Thanks for the replies.

If you are already pulling in dolphin and cobia.. just keep that combo going. If you were going for tarpon, then I would say go bigger on the reel but, I didn't think that was what you were after.

If a fish starts to spool you just break him off at the leader (use a small enough tippet). If you start using the big rod more that a few times a year than just start saving up some coin. You could probably get a cheep used 12wt reel easier than just about anything else. I might even have one.

I was trying to run a 12 wt. line on my Tibor riptide 9-10-11 ans It just wasnt going to hold enough backing even with 20 spectra. I know it has been said many times but if your willing to drop the cash to go on a big trip for tarpon or sails OTF or even just the cash to gte offshore here for dolphin it doesnt make any sense to save a few hundo on your reel. I dont wanna drop over 2gs on a trip to get spooled by a fish of a life time becuase i wanted to save 300 bucks.

As for a cheap reel with plenty of backiongh I would rather buy a dependable reel for $700+ that will last 20years than a $200 reel that needs to be replaced every 2 years.

That said I picked up a LOOP opti BIG 500+ yrds of 50lb gel spun!! if you look you can find demos on the cheap like $400

I'll send you a PM too. But... Jedi was over in Iraq. Can you beat that?

Just kidding. I’ll give you both a PM and remember, the original offer was not a definite anyway. The real point is that used 12 wt’s are easier to find a deal on than 9wt’s.

20lb spectra backing on that reel can hold enough backing, more than you think. with a strong rod like a 12w, you can put tremoundous pressure on the fish. you wont be able to put 20lbs of pressure on a fish w/o risking breaking the rod, so Id do it. id feel terrible having a huge fish spool me, both for the fish and the $$ lost, but for those few seconds, nothing is cooler, and nothing else matters. I have been spooled 1x…and it was the best/strangest feeling. “holy @#$%…what was that” rang though the ol noggin daily for years,

I figured that but ya never know on here  Apparently I have offended in the recent past and it wasn’t my intention. So what do you think about a “time Share” Abel? We could get like 4 of us to chip in so we can afford a nice 12wt reel and take turns fishing with it… hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
