Man I am pulling for this to happen. Sure they are wasting time, when they could be coming together in a bi partisan fashion to get stuff done, but at least this may shut down some schitty gubment agencies like NOAA for awhile.
Well. I have a good friend that works for NOAA so I’m definitely not hoping they will lose their job in this economy. But I do agree with you. I’d love to see the EPA get about an 85% cut in funding!
I understand your argument but don’t blame the workers for what the politicians do.
to many people lump government into 1 big group. but the day to day workers ate no different than you.
be angry at the politicians.

if NOAA, etc are facing half the cuts the military are, they probably won’t be doing much. Without doing a lot of research on the specifics it’s hard to say though, federal money comes from so many different pools its ridiculous, and not all are getting cuts.
Even so, it won’t probably won’t help anybody - just means they won’t be able to pay for any studies to justify changing the limits. And writing rules based on existing data is cheap and easy, so I’d say its far more likely that things will stagnate until they have MORE funding.
This sequestration is scary stuff. Regardless of your thoughts on the federal gov’t role, budgets, military, etc, requiring immediate, drastic cuts to an already strapped DOD for the sake of politics is not good. Canceling training, deferring maintenance, laying off or furlowing support personnel, canceling deployments… doesn’t take a genius to see that there must be a better way.

Fishb8…gotta disagree with u on this. Many screwed up government policies are set by people that spend a lifetime in these government agencies like the EPA, NOAA, FDA,…ETC…ETC…They should have term limits just like the crooks in Congress should.
100% agree with the Stripe!! Simple question - if you were employed by a company that had different ethics and beliefs than you, would you continue to work there? Would that make you part of the solution or part of the problem??? Just a thought!

For starters, I do not buy that these cuts are “necessary”---- not the cuts they are making.
What we are doing is robbing from organizations that probably need it (military, perhaps research), but funding everything from extremist Egypt to an overpaid congress.
Sequester bs is just a smokescreen intended to manipulate the public.
Anyone that thinks the military is underfunded needs to drive by the Pentagon, or watch the History channel or the Military channel…There are piles of things that can be eliminated without the Defense of this country being sacrificed. Overspending is rampant. Entitlements are obviously the biggest part of the problem. It needs to be cut everywhere.
stripe I agree. but the little people are not to blame. but they are paying for it.
the data entry clerk. system administrators. Secretary. etc. etc.
they are just doing their job.

Redstripe when you say entitlements should be cut, I hope you arent talking about all the vets that are drawing retired pay. I happen to be retired with 20 years .

It's a bit out of proportion, no? I don't really care about "bringing democracy" to the ROW at the expense of bankrupting our own economy at home...

It’s a drop in the bucket, what part of we The USA are broke; don’t people understand.History will repeat itself and the fed (reserve)is printing money as fast as it can,OH isn’t that what Germany did at the end of ww2?
Please DON"T get me started!!!
I’m not sure how you made the leap that I don’t want vets to get their benefits. That’s not the case. Since you asked, I will say that some government pension plans are outdated. I saw that their are 25,000 former gov workers with 100,000.00 dollar a year pensions for the rest of their lifetimes. Does that sound sustainable…?
From what I’ve read, the cuts are not cuts. They are reductions in the rate of growth. Even with the so called cuts, the CBO estimates we’ll spend more each year than we did the year before. That being the case, 'seems like job losses are not likely. I bet we won’t notice.

I will ask again. If this is a reduction in the rate of growth, why will it cost me 20% of my pay NOW?
Palmer would you notice if you lost 20% of your pay? My mortgage is not being reduced by 20%. my car payment is not 20% less.

Fishb8, I am with you in that I also may be lined up for furlows. 'Not a fed, but I am one of the private sector dominoes that may be hit.
And, the answer to your question is I don’t know. I don’t think Obama or his people know. Our Gov’t has not passed a budget in a long time. They have NO IDEA where the money goes… not in terms of a business managing cash flow. How do you manage a business (accounting wise) when you never actually plan anything?
I think that if the Gov’t wanted to identify 10% cuts without effecting a single pay check, it could be done easily. From where I sit $millions fly through the system from panicked federal projects that don’t want it left over because that will reduce their base line. Spend it on anything b/c if we don’t spend it we get less next year. That is absolute lunacy in the current debt situation. But, ’ happens constantly.
The only part of the money flow that I think is actually ‘managed’ is that small slice that is used to pay the political favors. Pet projects. Grants for some policy or another (solyndra,etc.). The rest of it is just noise for the politicos. The vast majority of gov’t spending is totally un-managead. That’s how we get to having more structural liabilities than we can afford making us barrow about 45% of every dollar this year. $16-17 trillion in debt and stacking it up at about a $trillion a year = not managed at all.

Sensible cuts are needed.

That’s the way I interpreted it. This current President is just making it seem like it’s a huge deal.
Am I off base on this?
Our Government does not make money but simply allocates resources?
They collect “taxes” and decide how to spend “our” money - this is the function of the government correct?
So in essence when we “give” 250 million dollars to Egypt - our politicians have made the decision that all of the tax paying Americans think this is a good idea and are willing to pay for it!
I just don’t understand why more Americans can’t face the fact that:
THERE IS NO FREE MONEY!! Somebody is paying the tab!
And as reported by MSN - we all just recently investing $350,000 in a robotic squirrel! OH YEA - I agreed to pay for that!
I’m sorry but our elected officials both Democratic and Republican remind me of Peg Bundy from the TV show Love and Marriage! Spend, Spend, Spend and have somebody else pay the bill!!
