GPS App Navionics

Hey how are you. The trip to Panama and Destin was so fun and relaxing. A whole week of fishing on my boat and on a party boat. Thanks to everyone, Navionics App worked wonderful. Once i got out there all the inshore and offshore reefs popped right up on my phone. I was completely rocked by it. Took it and used it as well in Destin Florida on the water also. It instantly pulled up reefs everywhere there also. Me and my girl caught alot of fish. So I will give that app both thumbs up because it really works. Thanks again everyone.

Man, that’s great, glad it worked well for you and that you had a good week! I’m heading down to just south of Boca Grande next week. I have a chartplotter/fishfinder on my boat but, I’m tempted to load that app and try it out myself. I also found another one called Polaris GPS I plan to try.

Good luck DFreedom. Have a safe and fun trip.

Thanks GF, hoping to have a good report or two.

I’m with you. The boating app is as solid as it gets. I always use it to plan beforehand as well as a backup on the boat at all times. Shoot, I even used it on a mount for two weeks this year, waiting for my Simrad Evo3 to come in. Spot on.

I’ll be using my 10 inch pad with Navionics to deliver a boat from NC to FL this next week using the pad alone (boat does not have GPS unit on it yet)… going to stay in the ditch at first but then buzz out nearshore if all goes well with it. I’ve used it before and appreciated it’s accuracy and detail. It works great so far, keeps a downloaded series of maps and all detail for the area you select whenever you need to. And I get tides at each stop and other good info. This will be the first time I’ve relied only on the android app version… taking my Humminbird as a Plan B

One thing to note - I learned the hard way that the WiFi-only iPads do not have a GPS receiver. Only the WiFi+cellular iPads have a GPS. So if you’ve got a WiFi-only iPad, you will also need a separate Bluetooth GPS. I picked one up from BadElf and it works well.

Follow up: The Navionics on my 10 inch pad worked perfect! HOWEVER… the salt water spray and humidity took a toll on my pad. I did manage to put the pad in a 1 gal ziploc and that helped keep it from getting soaked but it worked GREAT. I had my Humminbird working on the side also and it performed great as usual but the 10 inch screen was much easier to read and zoom. The app allows you to “download” the area you need so it works without internet connection. You need to zoom in to places to be sure it picks up ALL the detail and keeps it in memory to be sure the app will meet your need. Also, since I added the app to my 10 inch pad just prior to leaving, it was updated with all of Navionics current data.

Yes, the navionics app and charts are loaded resident on your cell (based on the area you define, and all you need is a gps signal on your phone or tablet. Great as a backup unit.

Wow, that is great. I’ve had the app for years but only used it inshore. I have the Navionics card and current subscription for the Humminbird, this is a great back up. Once again awesome info on CF.com.

It works fine on my WiFi only iPads (we have it installed on 3) to my knowledge, all iPads have GPS receivers. Location services has to be turned on in settings however. Biggest issues I have are the screen brightness in the sun, the polarization direction of the iPad screens when wearing sunglasses.
