Gps/fisfinder

Does anybody have a reccomdation for a gps/fish finder to replace a humminbird 383c or what may be the problem with my current one. We were out in 100’ and it started to randomly lose the bottom on the picture while saying the depth was 16 feet. We were not moving. There was seaweed in the area but not on the transducer. I plugged my old humminbird fisfinder in and it’s quartz screen could see the bottom accurately. So it has to be in the unit. Any advise would be appreciated.

I have a Garmin 740S. It was a little pricy, but I love it. Only issue is a fussy power button that takes some getting used to. I used to buy a new, cheap Hummingbird depth finder every year or so. Should have started with a Garmin and saved some $$.

I will google that one…I may be showing my ignorance here as I haven’t researched any of this for about 7 years but can you enter waypoints on a PC and then transfer them to GPS on a card or with a chord for that model?

I think so. You can download the owner’s manual from the Garmin site. I got an extra mounting bracket and power cord and rigged 12 volt power at my laptop desk. I just enter the waypoints directly into the GPS as I “deskfish” on Google Earth. The 740 has a 7" wide screen. You can get a 5" screen model cheaper.

Oops, I just Googled the Garmin site, and the 740S has been discontinued. I am sure they now have something newer/better to replace it.

I have a Garmin 441S and really like it. My only regret is not going with the bigger screen 541.

I have an old 383c you can have. It’s just sitting in a drawer.
Let me know if you want it.

Thanks for the offer! But after researching the new models and new technology I believe there is a reason yours is in the drawer. I have convinced myself that it is time to upgrade.

I like the 546s. It’s a decent unit for the price and comes preloaded with plenty of charts.

I agree. Replaced my 383c with an 898cSI.
Pick up a Navionics Card. Nice to have contours in the rivers and harbor/nearshore. Not required though can make a pretty picture.
Totally different world under the boat now.
Get the biggest screen you possibly can afford/fit.

Side imaging is fun but not required.
Having an external GPS puck seems to be a little more accurate, though that might just be in my head.
I like my new Humminbird but am not in love with it.
If you are considering getting an Ipilot trolling motor, it would be worth a little extra to make sure your fishfinder is compatible.

I have had the Garmin 541s for about three years. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. It’s a good unit, however, I am looking at the Hummingbird 999csi. Anybody know anything about it or owns one?
