GPS questions

I have a small boat, and would like to get a GPS for it. I mainly fish inshore, but if there are calm seas, would like to go to a nearshore reef. What would be the best unit for <$400? Considering a handheld unit. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have an old Magellan that is all you need. It cost me around 300 about 6 years ago and it has an adapter for cigarette lighter, which is a good thing to have as some models are not kind to the batteries. I use it flounder gigging and the light for the screen goes through batteries in a few hours.

Check this one out. I use it for storing points and waypoints. Easier than my Lowrance on the boat. I just lay it on the dash. Good map and color detail. Check out the reviews on this site.

Yes, It has the tide tables. It displays tide stations on the map. You just pan the cursor over the station you want info. on and hit enter. A graph will pop up showing the present, past and future tide predictions at that location for 24 hrs. On the graph, you can change the date and time to get other tide predictions at the location for any date you would like.

DueSouth, that’s a very good price on the 76C SX at Wally World. I have that unit and it’s a gudn. If you know your way around computers and use ExpertGPS software, it’s a pretty good all-around unit and very reliable. I use it on my motorcycle, truck, boat and out in the woods. The Tide and Moon tables are very accurate. I have a 76S for sale, by the way. Take $150 for it.

For a good handheld try the Garmin Colorado. You can buy w/preloaded nautical maps or buy the chip. It is water proof and submersible and runs on AA batteries. I bought one w/the preloaded nautical maps and then bought the chip for road maps, so I can carry it boat & car. I have it as a backup for my boat.
