GPS/Sounder combo question

I’m looking at replacing my older separate Garmin units with a single unit sometime this spring. I like some of Garmin’s products, but does anyone have any experience with the HDS series from Lowrance? I’m specifically interested in the HDS-7. Thanks

I’ve got the HDS 10 and really like it. I am using the built in Insight map and it seems dead on everywhere I go. You can add side-scan or whatever they call it but I haven’t taken that plunge yet. Some people bash Lowrance. I guess all products have their bashers.

How much more is the 8 over the 7? I remember looking at all of them and the 8 seemed to have a much larger screen.

I just bought the HDS 10 about 6 weeks ago, only used it inshore but so far love it. I also got the structure side scan sonar for it…it is the chit, again haven’t tried it offshore but you can go by docks and see the pilings and reef stuff people have drop in, looks like a black and white picture. I have found a lot of interesting things in Bohicket creek……well worth the extra $700.00 Radar, fuel flow sensors, live well temp sensors, etc etc etc can be added very easy. It will display up to 4 different screens at once.

If you have room for all, keep your old unit on as insurance, never hurts to have a back up. we run two HDS-10’s on the boat. Great units, very detailed. The 7 should be just as good. HDS requires more button pushing than my previous Lowarance unit but once past the learning curve you will see things you’ve never seen before. Sidescan is nice but you still have to catchum up. Frustrating to seem them down there and not getum to bite!! Good luck.

Thanks guys. I’ll be putting it on my 19’ bayboat (a Twinvee, Capt Ed), so the 10 would just be overkill. I use the sounder more than anything, but do run off the beaches from time to time so the GPS sure comes in handy.
