Grand Slam 4/19/13 Pics

Took the Grand Slam out for 8 hours out of Cancun, MX. Trolled for about 4 hours, stopping a lot to sabiki bait and throwing live lines to catch more bonito. Trolled to a bottom drop spot. That’s where things got interesting. Their idea of bottom fishing is using a 10lb down rigger set-up on each side and getting a slab or 2 of bonito about 6-10" long then popping off the clip on the down rigger ball and letting it drift the bottom for the bite. Not the bottom fishing I was looking for. They set the hook and gave you the rod. Nonetheless, had a GREAT time. Other boat in our group (same fishing company) had a little better day than us. We went 0 for 1 on sail, pretty much jumping off immediately after hooking up. I’ve realized, when you hear the captain start going crazy in spanish, a sailfish or white marlin is in the spread. The other boat ended up with a 40+ grouper and a 45-50lb hooter and went 1 for 1 on sail. In comparison on their grouper pic, the snapper they are next to are 20-25lb and it’s as long as 2 of them together. Our boat ended with more bonito than I can count, good many of decent snapper, biggest around 10-15 lb, some nice Queen Trigger, a rainbow runner, a tile fish?, and whatever those dark colored jack are called.

This was my 2nd stay there in 2 years. First year wife was passing kidney stones whole time and this time 4-5 people out of our group got E. coli! It could be better. After the E. coli issues I’m not wanting to go back. Came mostly from room service hamburgers.

PR, How did the eyes on the rod get turned backwards and was pink their favorite color?

Sucks to hear about the kidney stones and e coli outbreak man. Hope you have better luck next vacation!

My wife and I stayed at Dreams two years ago and loved it. I took a ferry to Isla Mujeres and fished with a friend of mine we caught 12 sails. We didn’t bottom fish looks like we should have. If you are in Isla don’t miss the Stump bar.

Can someone help with what type of Rods these are and why the eyelets are like this? It’s a 1 piece made like this. They had grey, purple and pink Avet reels. But the rods had me stumped. I didn’t look @ the make of them. They rotated around over 3-4 eyelets turning a open face to a spinning rod in 1. What’s benefit?

The only other place I’ve seen that are custom-made rods for muskie and big pike. I was under the impression the design was beneficial for excessive casting of large lures. That logic wouldn’t really apply to a vertical jig set-up like you have there.

Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

What is Robert’s Wrap:

A Robert’s Wrap has nothing to do with thread wrapping. It has to do with the position of the guides on the blank. The first guide from the butt is placed on top of the blank with the second and third guides rotating towards the bottom. The remainder of the guides are installed on the bottom of the rod blank. This style of guide placement is not a new invention, and has been around for approximately 75 years. Until recently the Robert’s Wrap has been used mainly for ocean fishing because this design helps reduce the torque on the rod and reel when battling big fish in the big ocean. Some other benefits from this design are rod stability, reduced line friction, line never comes in contact with the blank, and a increase in sensitivity.

They had some regular roller rods but no heavy equipment. They only had 1 rod with a bigger Avet reel. I’m not sure what would’ve happened had we hooked a 300lb marlin or 80lb hooter

Plus Acid wraps look cooler. That’s half of fishing right?

They really do reduce the sideways torque keeping the rod from wanting to roll over. I like mine and want a few more.

I like the design. Makes sense.

The blanks have a natural twist in them and I think I’ve read that this setup either counteracts it or embraces it, can’t remeber which one.

I think there is a “spining” technique that determines which direction and how severe it is, etc.
