Grass Carp

I found some ponds holding fish and caught a few on an ultralight with a breadball. I’m hooked now. What flies yall actually throwing that work? I reckon a 4/5 or a 5/6wt would be best to toss with?

I use bets popping bugs. Yellow and red are my favorite colors. I catch bass carp and bream with it. I use 7wt line 8ft rod and about 2 foot of mono leader

I tie 90% of the flies I use and grass carp was a species I wanted to target. I did some research and found that they are named after what they eat, GRASS! So I headed to LFS to grab some material that looked like algae. I always saw them eating on the side of the pond so I picked out whatever looked that color. I got the green and brown dubbing material and tied it strait to a hook. It looks like a clump of grass. When you throw at the fish you need to lead it by more than a few feet. They have very long and very sensitive lateral lines and they feel that fly hit the water and ignore it or spook. One thing I tried was taking one piece of bread and my fly rod to the pond and chumming the water a little to get them in the eating mood. Once the bread is all gone and they are still looking for food you toss the algae fly about 8 feet from their face. I’ve caught 2 or 3 of them now and I use a 3/4wt. It’s a great fight!

The will eat dry flies and small poppers with no legs. Also peacock herl tied on a hook will look like grass

There is no normal life, there’s just life.

In case you were wondering what the fly looks like

I used to slay those grass carp when I was a kid on my “Wonderbread fly”. Just put a tiny piece of bread on a hook and get it in front of them. Done deal.

If I’m throwing fly its always 100% artificial. Putting bait on the hook is cheating

Unless you’re using organic bread:wink::smiley:

And you probably use only dry flies when trout fishing…

“I may be going to hell in a bucket. But at least I’m enjoying the ride”

I don’t trout fish. I don’t find joy in catching a fish smaller than my foot

But trout fishing is easy, you just chum them up with bits of corn first…

A long long slow walk in the spartina gives you time to think big thoughts and put your mind back into order.

Most of the trout I’ve caught in the mountains were smaller than my foot. I’ve caught some rather large rainbows too. I cant imagine a fly fisherman that doesn’t enjoy catching trout even if they are smaller than his foot.

Well I haven’t actually been freshwater trout fishing before so I guess I can’t really judge it. I need to try it sometime

You’ve got to try it. Its exhilarating watching a trout rise and eat a dry fly. The trout are usually small but it gets your blood pumping. After you try that take a trip for salmon when they’re spawning. That’s a trip you’ll never forget.

I’ve know a few people who have gone fishing for salmon while they were spawning and that looks fun!
