Been out the water for way too long. Took a buddy from work out in the kayaks and hit the morning low. Perfect wind all morning. Came up on a big school of fish – big surprise for this time of year. We hooked up with a couple of fish each out of that group, real small though. School was happy even though they knew we were there.
Went exploring and found a flat I had never fished before. Saw some huge reds cruising real shallow, full backs out the water and everything. Hooked up with one and he was a pig. Had to take a pic.
End of the day - 6 fish between us. Besides this big one, the rest were slot. Really dirty water out there today, made the fishing tough. The glassy conditions and backs out the water made it. Out of the water by noon - one hell of a morning.
hey livestoked, just getting into the kayaking things got a tandem kayak for my girl and I and would love to go fishing one day or any information on where we can launch from. by the way nice fish.
off2fish – tandem kayak fishing sounds tough, but who knows? maybe yall can swing it. what areas are you looking to fish? i’ll recommend some launch spots based on that . . .
ziggy - 2" Gulp peeler crab, rigged weedless on a 2/0 circle. Rigged texas style w/ a 1/8 bullet.
stoked- had a question, when you say sounds tough you mean because two people fishing at once is hard or because of the size of the yak or what? She more so will be out for the paddle, she likes to fish but just being on the water is good for her too. What about me soloing in the tandem, will i be affected?? sorry so many questions.
off, I’m obviously not the OP, but I can attest to the fact that fighting a good fish from a tandem yak is not easy. Its hard for the passenger to know what the fish is doing and how to react in order to control the boat or keep balance. That’s not to say that it can’t be done; it’s just more difficult.
O2F,
To be honest, I bought my yak based on an on-line magazine review. I took a chance, DolphinD made me a deal, and the rest was all luck. Now I’m not saying the Ulimate is the best yak ever, but it works for how/where I fish. No matter what tandem I bought, I would have made it work for fishing. I’ve had the best time of my life when TBjr hooked up with a big ole pig of a red. Just remember to take your time, enjoy your time with your daughter while you can. Make it work, you won’t regret it.
Also, check out http://www.sckayakfishing.com/ there’s a bunch of yakkers that would be happy to help you out regarding yak setups.
