Great Dane

Pippin21; Let’s wait for Sellsfish to say yea or nay! But thanks for the offer and I’ll put you down for the $50.

Had no idea on the fees. Never was told that. I’ll talk to someone and see what I can do since she works with them.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

my friends just drove to ohio a couple of weeks ago to buy one.they ended up buying 2.i would take him but we inherited a 70lb boxer when my paw-in-law passed away last year.now I got a 6lb yorkie,70lb boxer and a 20 year old son that eats everything in the house.

I’ve got some friends in Summerville that have 2 of them and both of them sleep in their bed with them.[:0]

I’m skeptical about “rescue” organizations. As some of you have already mentioned, it seems that some of these organizations are more interested in making $$ than finding a home for the dogs. Local SPCA’s have the same costs if not more for taking care of animals and what do they charge for adoptions,$75-$100??? and even with them sometimes they have free adoptions. I’d much rather get a dog from the SPCA than from a 'rescue" group.
But, I hope that it works out for that “big” guy!

I would of taken him in a heart beat. However I have a 100lb American bulldog and two 50lb mutts my wife rescued over the years.

sharky and pippin21, you guys are doing enough by chipping in if needed!

where I work in Lexington our shop is behind the the dog pound.it kills me to see the dogs out there in the mornings for about a week. then the cooler is being emptied for the next go round…

money is not the problem, the principle of charging such high fees for a rescue is the problem. We gave $150 for Mojo our German Shepherd, and he is the best dog we have ever owned. I appreciate all the support, but I think we will pass on this one.

I spoke with the lady that volunteers at the shelter today and she kind of gave me a rundown on why it is as much as it is. First this is not a government subsidized shelter or nor will a dog there get a needle if they are there over a certain date. All dogs are given a full exam, wormed, medicated for ailments, microchipped, vaccinated and fully certified as healthy before leaving. They also put a higher price on some of them, especially when people call out of the blue inquiring about them. Many of these dogs are rescued from breed mills or from people that used them as fighting/fight training stock, they want to evaluate the owner face to face to settle on a price. No one there receives a wage, they are all volunteers, even the vets. The light bills and rent get paid through the adoption fees and the generosity of donors.

I wish that I had had this information prior to posting the ad. Just wanted to fine the big fellow a home. Still wouldn’t mind him myself but 2 GSP’s and two small boys already have my wife a nervous wreck, couldn’t imagine what a horse like dog would do.

I put the word out here in Lexington. I would love to have him as we have 7 acres, but I already have 2 large Great Pyrs and a beagle. Just dont think I can afford another mouth right now.

Can you publish or PM me with the rescue that has him? thanks

Thanks - I have a friend that has a great dane - He is looking into this guy now. Hopefully it will work out.

The adoption fees in this situation are understandable. Feeding, medical care, and housing these dogs is expensive. From an operations standpoint, you really need to recover your costs on the high demand dogs so you can continue to pay your expenses on the ones nobody wants, ie the older mangey dog on the front page that will more than likely never get adopted. Just think of it as a donation!
