Great day on the tarpon

Even though the wind wouldn’t cooperate the tarpon were on board. Went 2 for 2 on two big fish. The big gal was 150 plus. Flat wore us out.

Now that’s what I’m talking about.

Very nice! Did you find them out off the beach or up in the river a bit?

Saw some big ones busting the water around Botany Sat afternoon… Airborne would be a good way to describe what I watched.

My vet, no, dog’s vet, called me at 6am last Sunday morning. Said he was wanting to try to catch a tarpon and he was heading out now. Where should he go, what kind of bait, what kind of rig, how to fish for them…

Hmmmm, he’s a great vet, great guy and takes real good care of dog. I told him to give me 15 minutes to wake up and think about it. I haven’t targeted tarpon near Savannah in 20 years.

I remembered a spot where I’ve had good success in years past. Strange spot, inshore at the junction of 3 creeks, a few miles from the ocean. There is an underground spring that creates an upwelling of cold water and has made a hole about 70’ deep. The tarpon love it in hot weather. I sent him there as a best guess.

He calls me back in a couple of hours, said they had seen 20, hooked 5 and landed 2[:0] Dang, beginners luck. I’ve never done that well anywhere other than Boca Grande Pass.

Vet bills are covered for a while anyway

Saw a guy hang one about a hundred pounds at the Hunting Island/Fripp bridge. He fought that fish forever and it drug his boat for over three miles in front of Fripp.

Lol…they were SC fish…or at least visiting here for the time being. Gonna give it a go again tomorrow. Gonna be hard to duplicate Sunday but what the he%* might as well try

What did you catch him on? Live menhaden/mullet? How deep?

First, Most, Biggest
I want to catch them all

damm…its about that time…big mullets are gettin’ thick.

Ah, Cracker, I have fond memories of the Boca Grande Pass-great Tarpon spot.
Spent our honeymoon in Boca Grande 53 years ago.

Craziest place I’ve ever fished, been 4 times for the tarpon run, don’t think I’ll do that again.

And I’ve never landed one even half as big as the one in that picture. It might well be heavier than 150. Heck of a fish!!

Had 3 tarpon bust behind the boat today chasing mullet but none wanted our big menhaden. Thought we were gonna be in the game today again but no love from the poon. Ended up with one shark. Beautiful morning out there though

Thanks for the report and picture.

Glad ya’ll had good luck, seems every time I have the right bait and in the right place all I catch is big sharks!
