Took the morning off from work to fish with my son (on his day off). The skies were a little scary and the radar app showed some nasty stuff heading our way.
We decided that a little rain wouldn’t hurt us and off we went to Guerin creek where we found mullet by the thousands. We quickly filled the bait well and started to systematically hit a few old and new spots.
We certainly were not equally successful at every single spot… in fact in some of the most productive spots in recent outings we did very poorly this time…
HOWEVER… other spots produced some very nice fish. Specifically the big trout seemed to be very hungry today
BUT… the fish of the day was without a doubt the 36" redfish that was caught literally as I was reeling in the last line before heading back to the hill. The fish hit like a freight train and for a split second we were afraid that it would run into the docks. I would not have been able to stop him …
I was quickly running out of line in the first few minutes of the fight (Shimano Symetre with 3/4 spool of 20# braided), as the fish constantly would pull off way more line than I could retrieve. It was a good back and forth in the minutes that followed. “Excellent” team work with my son (who maneuvered the boat with the iPilot making sure that we kept well positioned) resulted after a very good and exciting fight, in the surrender of this 36" beast
