Great Islands Anyone?

I’ve been launching my yak out off Patterson Road from that little park on the corner at the end of the street on James Island.

It’s a great place close to home to launch (don’t come back at low tide, you’ll have to slug through 25 yards of pluff mud). I’ve caught some fish out in James Island creek, some whiting and a nice 16 inch sea trout.

But I wanted to take the dog out and was curious if anyone knows of an island nearby the James Island area so I can row out and fish while the dog runs and plays.

Thoughts anyone?

Launch from Bowen’s island and head downstream toward King’s Flats. Handful of uninhabited island between there and Stono for dog; you can fish the flats and creeks. Check Google Earth or Wikimapia.

Launch from the Sol Legare ramp, head downstream to same island/creeks mentioned above- just hitting the Stono River end of them.

Launch from Folly, head upstream, fish creeks/flats on left while dog roams Long Island. Or 4.5 mile paddle to Morris Island for you and dog. Could park at east end of Folly, drag yak to water, and have much shorter trip to Morris. Again check Google Earth or Wikimapia.

Never thought about bringing the dogs. Chihuahuas probably make good sharkbait.

Haha. I’ve got a basset. But he would probably make decent shark bait as well. Thanks for all the great ideas! I’m going out this weekend and will give them a shot! I’m not sure where Bowen’s Island is though…I should probably buy a navigational chart.

Its on your right as your headin out to Folly, theres a big sign off of Folly Road that says Bowen’s Island Restraunt. Drive all the way down the gravel road and the restraunt is on the left and a big pile of oyster shells on your left, cant miss it.

PS: Be careful lettin your basset run around on some of those islands stickman is talkin about. There is one on the Folly side of the Stono that a guy has setup a “tree house” outa old wood and scraps. Hes got a little fence up and a some personal belongings out there, too. Not sure if he owns the island or is “sqatting”. Anyway, happy fishin to you and your dog.

Thank you all of your great ideas! And I’ll leave the old codger on the island alone…

Unless he’s got some good fishing tips. Then I’ll kidnap him and hold him for ransom until he coughes up his secrets…

Oh, I forgot to ask. I’m needing some navigational charts for this area. Have any of you found any online for free or recommend a good place to buy them?

Moultrie, the park you speak of, is that off Folly by the gas station. The dock is leaning to the water a bit??

try this site to see overlay of NOAA charts on Google earth. Can dial in or out the NOAA chart overlay.

Can purchase laminated fishing hotspot chart of harbor to Edisto for about $13 at the usual stores. Good starting point for JI and Folly.

I’d imagine those islands have some nasty snakes, ants, and other critters. I only venture on them for nearshore potty breaks. Haven’t mastered the art of the yak void.

Well, didn’t make it out this weekend. Too bad. Those islands probably have everything stick man mentioned, but I guess all you can do is keep an eye out for anything too nasty and try to keep the hound away from gators…Hopefully I’ll make it out next week.

And to Dolphin, yeah you did get it right. The dock does lean a bit. Great place to head out at about 2 hours to high tide. Make sure you come back not more than an a few hours after high tide though or you’ll be slugging through a pluff mud mess.
