Thank you guys. I got caught up in the fun and forgot to mention a few things that I had in my notes but I’ve been using this set-up for a couple of years now and it does what I need. Last night when I got home, I checked out the tank and watched a Gizzard Shad “flip” several times. It would tailwhip the surface and dart back down. It’s really the first time that I have seen this in the tank and it was always the same bait doing it. I skipped a portion of the program called “Gizzard shad or Not?” where I would flash up some pictures of big fish that me or some friends have caught in the past and let ya’ll guess if it was caught on a Gizzard Shad…lol Maybe next time…

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…

I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…

I was just out in the yard trying out Warren’s underhand toss with my 7 footer. It only took about 4 attempts to nail it. Great technique Warren! Thanks for sharing! No longer will I have the fear of loosing teeth while tossing a net

I also really enjoyed the build your own bait storage system presentation by Woody “MacGyver” Barnes. Until last night, I had no idea you could build a bait tank using nothing more than mismatched PVC fittings and a Bic pen.

I wasn’t at the meeting so I am not sure what all was or wasn’t covered. I can say for sure that if you are trying to catch gizzards a 10’ 1" mesh net is a lot easier to throw. A bigger net is actually easier to open. It’s techinique over strength to throw a net. Through the winter months I have been catching gizzards along main creek channels anywhere from 15’-25’ deep. I rarely locate gizzards by seeing them “flip”. Most of the time I just throw the net in different areas and different depths trying to establish a pattern. During the winter they are easy to locate on the graph in deep water. Catching them can be slow. If you are getting 2 or 3 large ones every few casts than you are doing good. I can catch dollar bill size all day long but the 8" - 12" are harder to come by. As the water warms they will move shallow but right now they are still deep. I caught 52 on Sat and 47 on Sun. All within the 8" - 12" range and in 15’ - 20’ of water. Catching them is tough tough work but very rewarding when you catch a big fish on bait you caught. It just takes lots of work and yes you will tear up nets. I always carry 3 or 4 nets when I go out to catch them. This past weekend I tore up a 10’ net costing over $100 but I am also learning the area I have been catching them. I have a round poly 1200 gal tank in my yard. I’m on a well and just keep a small tricke of fresh water coming into the tank. I drain down halfway every couple days. I have one those pond filters I plan to hook up soon for mechanical and biological filtration. Attached is a pic looking inside. I have some rip rap in the bottom to give them a “homey” feeling. Lol. Actually was hoping algae would grow on the rip rap to feed them.

Bryan, thanks for sharing that info on your tank, I have one with well water, but on a smaller scale. How long have you keep them in the tank and have you found anything they will eat?

This time of year I can keep bait for at least a month to month and half before they start getting skinny. As the air temp increases so does the metabolism of the bait and they get skinny quicker. I’ve tried feeding pelleted pond fish food and that seems to work. The pellets disolve and the gizzards absorb the food, but I always seemed to end up with tail rot fungus afterwards. I haven’t been able to find anything to feed them or chum them to catch them easier.
