The Navigational channel will be once again dredged to make way for larger container ships. 9 million cubic yards of sand stone will be displaced to make this happen. This map is a proposed use the sand stone. Reefs will be built alone side of the sea channel as well as another reef built south of the sea channel. Guys, this is a really exciting, once in a lifetime event for Charleston. The map does not do justice to the size of these proposed reefs. Each of the eight rectangular reefs is 36 ACRES of rubble. The amount of rock to be redistributed is estimated to be 40 MILLION cubic yards. I’ve heard this presentation from the Army COE a couple times now, and its just really awesome for us fisher-people.
If funding is available, by the way, they are open to other ideas for where to put some of the rubble, for example, inshore somewhere. However, funding must be available to move it away from the point of extraction, and it’s not cheap. It would make awesome substrate for oyster reefs, for example.
There will be much more press to come on this in the near future.
