Went out to fish tonight at dead low, caught 25-30 perfectly sized FM. Could not keep the reds off my line…caught 7 slot and 2 over slot, all in about 45 minutes. I was having a blast!
Red #10 hits my rod and tears the rod holder clear off the boat and proceeds to tow my rod 30 ft from the boat before I even know what is going on…
Clearly not a bid deal if Mr. Red would have pulled in my $40 Wally-World combo but it pulled my Battle 3000 combo (the 1st time using it, still had the plastic wrap around the cork portion of the rod) into the salty abyss. By the time I pulled my other lines and pulled anchor, no Battle to be found.
So, if you happen to find a new Battle in the ICW, right around the Sullivan’s Island Connector Bridge, please message me! All things considered…I had a great night
And, the Deadly Charleston Triangle strikes again. A minnow bucket, beanbag chair, raybans, hat visor and now, a brand new Battle! When will this madness stop?
I have learned, that I get more bites when I set the rod down than I do when I hold it. Lost one myself last year but got it back. Sorry that happened. Someone needs to launch an investigation to what is going on down there.
I recently broke a rod tip on a new rod. My fault. I bought it with my gold mastercard. They refunded my money. The purchase assurance covers items broken or stolen within 90 days of purchase. If you happened to buy it with a gold mc they might cover it. Doesnt say it has to be stolen by a person.
i dont know how loose you set your drag but i will set mine very loose when im fishing with live/cut bait.
when i hear the drag pulling off… i just go over to the rod holder, tighten the drag, and reel tight
never had a pole taken this way… the only time i almost had a rod taken was when the drag was set too tight. bonnethead basically launched my rod at breach inlet day but luckily i was standing close enough to snatch it up
Yeah, thats the ticket! You march right back into that store and tell them that your rod and reel got stolen! You can just leave out the details! You know, they may not even ask, where-when-etc. They might not even ask if a police report was filed. I, of course, not being a lawyer, would think that wouldn’t even consitute fraud or theft by deception. Maybe you won’t be included in Romney’s 47%. Just saying, but then again, what do I know?
I was on the dock one night and my ugly stick light got yanked off the dock with a sedona 4000 reel. 6 years later my son and I are fishing off the dock and he catches it barnacle crusted and all w/ reel frozen up. Kept in the yard for about 6 months till finally threw it away.
So don’t give up just yet, you could still catch that old rod & reel with a little luck!
I never thought about the credit card trick! I’m in a have to try that in the morning. I did have my drag set too tight five because I’m used to fishing near docs and once the fish is under the dock I have no chance, that’s a great point of setting the drag real low when I’m in open water,. Maybe I’ll take up scuba…
Sharkhunter: Now that the how and when and why, you lost your gear is out here in the interweb for the world to share you better be careful with that card claim!
Look guys. I am not encouraging fraud. Tell the truth. The fish stole your rod. They will either refund it or deny it. When I broke my rod i told them the truth. I tripped and stuck the tip in the ground and it broke. They replaced it. It also has nothing to do with politics. It is a service they offer and you can utilize it.
I always set the drag loose on an ignored or unattended rod. I grew up channel cat fishing with 4 rods in at one time. I think the cats ran in schools up and down the river. Many times I had 2-3 on at 1 time. It would be 1 hour of nothing then you hear drags screaming left and right.
Fishinnutt: You and many others on here are worse than a bunch of stay at home moms at their weekly meeting at Starbucks to gossip… I love this site for the way it gets information to the fisherman and women of the Lowcountry, not for all the bickering. It’s exhausting to read at times. I already bought a new rod last night and no I didn’t call the cc company this morning b/c I didn’t feel right doing it. Can we keep the political bs out of the fishing discussion section?
Matt R: great advice! I went out this morning and pulled in 4 Reds over slot and already used your advice. I should have thought about that sooner and maybe I’d be 1 rod and reel richer!

I forgot to mention, try to use circle hooks when doing this if you already don’t. When the fish have a long time to chow down, they tend to get gut hooked. Non-offset circles seem to stop 90% of that.
Cat fishing, I didn’t care, I was eating it. Those big bull reds have earned the right to fight another day in my book. I try to handle them as little as possible, often not even getting a pic.
The thing to do that will catch the most fish, is to open a new beer! Open the beer and see how long it takes before you have a fish on! When your done with the, your done with the beer also, because 9 times out of 10 it has spilled while you were busy!

Add a St. Croix rod with a Shimano Spirex, Imitation Boga’s and some oakley’s
