Great Start to Summer- Happy Redfish

Was on the water by 7:00 this morning. Netted some mullet to fish a dock on the north side of Goat Island. Threw a top water on the way over and came up with a few trout (11"-12"). Fished the dock for about 30 minutes and was about to leave when all of a sudden I see one of my rods gradually bend over. I picked it up, applied some pressure to get it out from under the dock and it just takes off. 100yds…150yds…200 yds…well there goes all my line in less than 30 seconds. Right before the last of my line is about to be stripped off, I see a MASSIVE blacktip or spinner shark (still havent confirmed) leap completely out of the water…it had to be pushing 6’. Luckily as it jumped it chaffed through my leader and I was able to retrieve all my braid back:sunglasses:. Decided to head to the redfish grounds after this heart-stopping encounter. I arrive on the flat and immediately see some of the happiest redfish I have ever seen. Their eyes where out of the water (they were basically just crawling on their bellies) and one even beached itself chasing a mullet. I was able to pick off five, 17-34" in 4" of water. Since I could basically see the entire fish, it made gauging where to place my Zman Shrimp pretty easy. Great shallow water action! Had two come unglued up in the grass when the tide came up. Overall a great day and amazing way to begin the summer!

This guy didn’t move for ten minutes!

Here’s the rig I was using; Zman ShrimpZ on a weighted worm hook. I rig it backwards because I think it gives the bait a more natural motion and look. Very effective and I highly recommend it. I will see how it does on

Very nice. The shark sounds like what I hooked into two weekends ago. That thing was jumping out of the water like a tarpon. I have a little video of it. Shark had black tips, but everyone said it was a spinner shark also. Super fun to catch/watch.

Wow thanks for the report
