Great Trolling and Diving July 16

You never know how the day is gonna go when the girls bring bananas on the boat and you find out halfway through the day…but yesterday was a day with bananas that actually went pretty well.

Game plan changed around a few times but got a new one and went with it. Started wahoo trolling in 140ft about 9am. 30 min later had a 45lb wahoo on boga grip in the boat and i was happy and exhausted after bringing in 500 yds of line with a fish that didn’t wanna give up. Probably should have stopped trolling then but went out to the ledge to try and get another. Had a dolphin on and jumped him off. Then we had a unique thing happen. We see a billfish behind the wayback splashing and doing some weird stuff. I brought the lure in quick and we had a fish on with 200 yds line dumped immediately. Had fish on 20 minutes and then too easy for fish to come to boat. Little peanut 15in dolphin on the lure…so after talking with several experienced marlin fisherman we decided blue marlin had dolphin in mouth when bit the lure and it hooked the dolphin instead of him and he eventually just let go the fish and then the fight was over. Pretty crazy to have that happen and never really have the blue hooked.

We found a floating buoy with tons of growth on it and caught a decent phin off it and then pulled lines and ran back into 140ft for me to dive. TONS of fish on this spot. I shot biggest grouper i saw in first few minutes and it went 25lb on boga. Strong gag and he got my line all tangled up so i finished dive early and safe and came on up.

Then we came into 100 ft area. We did work on the first spot with nice gags all around legit 20lbs (not chasfishing 20lbs). The next spot had cobias all around our marker buoy so Kevin shot a nice one that went 47lb on boga but it caused a rucus and got line tangled. Long story but no more fish on that div

The wahoo is headless and tailless to fit in the cooler

so you can cut the head and tail off a wahoo and land it that way? what’s the deal about having to land head and tail intact? we almost had to deal with this situation this past weekend but the big hoo broke off right at the boat…
good pics and great report!

Really nice job on the fish and some great pictures, the wahoo pic is great and will eat really well. The regs state that “All fish in this section must be landed with head and tail intact” basically any saltwater fish

i cut the head and tail off at the house so it would fit in the cooler to store overnight b/c too late to clean any fish last night- i know you are supposed to have whole fish for DNR to check …if you are getting checked

Would take an ass of a game warden to write a ticket for cutting the head off a fish so he will fit in the cooler. Even if it is technically illegal.

Nice work Charles. Pretty fish, pretty ocean, pretty girl. Can’t beat it.

i bet there is one out there…

What really boggled my noodle is how I never felt a sudden release of tension rather it was gradual.

No wind, dying swell, clear water, big fish, no boats, girls, bros and smooth ride home. Looking back, it was an amazing day and another incredible experience of adventure forever burned into my brain matter. For that, Im incredibly grateful.

So… how many bananas you bringing next time?

Good goin my friend

There’s more than one that would…I’d wager most would, although they’d figure out a way to knock the fine down…

seriously doubt it. That law is not in place to prevent a recreational fisherman from bringing home a legal catch.
