I fished the Green River, just past the SC/NC state line, this past Friday and Saturday morning. Used (2) BH nymphs, one on a 12 inch dropper, with a couple of small split shot to get them down. Found a nice stretch of water, pulled over and peered over the bank…The trout were stacked up! I quickly rigged my rod, crept into the water, and on my third cast hooked up with a nice brookie. After releasing him, I began to cast to another pocket of water. Suddenly, I noticed a Dodge Durango pulling a jon boat drive up behind my car at the top of the bank. Game Warden. No big deal, I thought, until he told me I was fishing a closed section of the river. I should have known better, but for some reason I was thinking I was in the delayed harvest section. You have to pay attention to the little tiny signs posted here and there…If it says “Hatchery Supported”, steer clear of the area until April 3rd(I think). Anyhow, $150.00 later I moved about 1/4 mile up to the delayed harvest section, and proceeded to rack up on the rainbows and brooks. They were biting just about anything. My dropper nymph had unraveled and was practically naked, and the fish were still nailing it. My final fish of the day was a huge rainbow that broke my tippet on a hard run downstream.
P.S. Tomorrow (April 1) the DNR will be restocking the river.
