For those of you wanting to “mix it up” a little, and are interested in heading for the hills, now would be a great time to hit the Green River (Just past the SC/NC state line on I-26).
It’s the closest river to my cabin, so I tend to scout it often to see what the trout are doing. So far this spring I’ve seen more fish than I have in recent memory (unfortunately, most of the “seeing” has been from my car, peering over the bank for a looksee while on my way to business meetings). I think the stocking numbers are the same, there just seem to be more fish for whatever reason. Today I made a point to gear up and partake in some rod bending, and man was it ever a good idea!!
I made it to the river at 4:30p, and noticed most of my “holes” were already being fished. I ambled on up to the Fish Top Falls parking area, and figured I’d give that a shot. Oddly, I’ve never fished this spot, since it’s generally very busy with kayakers, tubers, and other fisherman. I had the place to myself. Around 5:45 a MASSIVE hatch came off, and the fish fed on my elk hair caddis offering with abandon. A young guy was fishing close to me with an Olive Wooly Booger tied with Krystal Flash, and was having good success as well. I caught numerous Brook trout, and several nice Browns. I fished for about 2 hours, and almost (note I said “almost”) tired of catching trout.
The Green is hot right now. I highly recommend going in the next couple of weeks if you’re in the mood for some sight fishing in the “fresh”.
