Has anyone tried fishing the grillage from a kayak? I’ve heard that it gets pretty rough when the tide starts coming in and that the currents are extremely strong. Anyone out there with experience?
I also had the owner of a local kayak shop tell me that there have been kayak fishermen who paddle out to the jetties. Anyone have any info on that?
good luck that current is all the time rippin. wouldnt advise it. well consider the current when you need to go back. If you wanna get out there that bad. use the current. If your coming from the harbor get out there on an outgoing tide and return on a incoming tide. Also consider the monster reds out there. youd have to get your anchor up and half the time peoples anchors get caught up on jonk on the bottom. Then you would have to worry about getting swamped by those monster reds. As well as how far out to the ocean they would take you. What im trying to say it: Not a good idea.
I certainly believe its possible to get to the grillage with a kayak. But there is ALOT of traffic out there on calm days… Being able to fight a fish and several boat swells is the obstacle.
Hey Mike,
As soon as my new Drifter comes in, I will be glad to try it with you. I found mine on the internet out of New York. It was a lot less expensive than local ones, even with shipping. They still have a couple at a very good price.
Iv’e seen a Kayaker at the Grillage, he was just playing and practicing his roll-overs or something…not too bright. I wouldn’t recommend it, especially with your equipment and a 30lb fish tugging on you.
You could get there from ft.moultrie parking lot in 5 minutes of paddling. The only way you could do it would be to get there an hour before low tide and come back an hour after the tide starts to come back in, fishing the slack tide.We have paddled over to morris island from there, but the tide gets crankin, and I pull my girlfreind back with a sunfish sailboat.I think if you rode the tide right you could easily go to the jetties and back.I think the best idea would be to drift fish the area. You can get plenty of monster reds all the way to the jetties.I would love to fish the outside of the north jetties with a kayak.Ive often thought of even sitting on the rocks and getting the bait right down to the fish…I wouldnt anchor in the current.Good luck…
