We doved and fished in 60 feet. I saw more hugh gags and ARS in 60 feet than I normally see in 120 feet. They were very friendly. There were very few small gags most looked to be in the 30lb range and one 15lb ARS. The ocean was lake like with no waves. I do not think you need to go beyond 80 feet to get big gags this time of the year.
So how many 30 lb Gags did you bring home?

Great day to dive Gregg. We saw you guys there - some in the clear water. Do you think the grouper were spawning? We didn’t catch much in the 30 minutes spent at the 60 before moving on to other spots. Guess I’ll do a report too.

so many 30lb gag claimers around the area and pics always show 15lb-20lb gags at best …
Fishnbarrels The fish are 20% larger on the bottom. We cannot be held responsible for the lost weight when we bring them to the surface.

With the thumb there in the picture this gag looks kinda like a flounder to me.
Took two of us to get this guy off the spear after he was cheek shot.

P1 is close. They have been known to aggregate in “pre-spawn” mode in as shallow as 66ft of water, but will move out to the continental shelf for the actual spawning process. Here is a pretty interesting document from our own SCDNR website:

There are a few interesting things here:
quote:
"Oyster reefs are a favored habitat for juveniles in South Carolina. Postlarvae recruit to inlets, harbors and saltmarsh creeks in March through June (peak in April) and remain until waters cool in October, when they move offshore."
Here is an article from the Post and Courier on August 26th, 2009…
http://www.allbusiness.com/environment-natural-resources/ecology-environmental/12747027-1.html
quote:
"Aug. 26--The report is as chilling as ice: 85 percent of the world's oyster beds present 100 years ago are gone, and the rest are in severe decline. Even in the shell-rich Lowcountry, about half the beds are gone."
Hmmm… So you mean to tell me that the preferred habitat of juvenile gag grouper is oyster beds and oyster beds are not only dying worldwide, but have been cut in half in SC alone (and we are one of the more stable states)? No! That just can’t be!
quote:
Coastal development adversely affects salt marsh, which is important habitat for juvenile gag. Gag may also be adversely affected by loss of oyster reef habitat that results from the oyster (Crassostrea virginica) fishery; gag use this habitat for the first few months of their lives in South Carolina.<hr height="1"
