Grouper near the CH 60?

Are there any spots close to the CH 60 to catch grouper?

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

i have been told by divers they are there.

i have never caught one there.

Around the 60, the problems you face trying to get grouper are
#1 lots of competition from other fishermen
#2 lots of competition from other fish

I catch some small ones when I fish in the area, and that’s normally only in late fall. (Jan-May closed season)

Fish smaller stuff and use your sonar more than your chart plotter…

Lots of bottom all around the 60 and shallower.

Like I said- use the sonar more than the chartplotter. Spots people use the chartplotter to fish are heavily pressured. Spots that need the sonar have very nice fish on them.

Small spots have fewer fish, but are great for fishing once every few years once you find them.

The number of these spots off our coast is nearly unlimited. The trick is the SONAR, however, NOT the GPS like everyone wants to think.

Spend time getting to know your sonar. Read the manual. See for yourself what it can do instead of leaving it on “auto.”

If your sonar cannot show you fish and changes in bottom hardness, then you need to 1)figure out how to make it do so or 2)get another sonar.

Depends on the time of year but there is a catch… I dove there in the fall at certain times last year and it as absolutely loaded with legal gag grouper however not a single one was caught by anglers on any trip. The only way we got them was to go down there and shoot them. Not sure why they push in to 60’ in the fall but it doesn’t seem to be the food.

Kayak, SCUBA, or both.

They don’t bite because of fishing pressure and water temps. Grouper are smarter than most people realize.

Your pet grouper at the 60 are not uncatchable, however.

Phin you make it look too easy . But your right about the sonar it took me a while to get use to reading it correctly. Now I know it like the back of my hand also found a lot of good bottom spots while trolling

grab the gaff and another cold beer

I fish there usually twice a year in the winter. Have only caught one grouper, but is was a 24 lb gag. Can remember getting rocked once, but thats about it. So they are there but not the most common catch…usually just lots of sea bass and a flounder or two.

forgot that comma.

Mountain Dew or Crab Juice. Eeww…sheesh…I’ll take a crab juice.

Got out there Saturday and put 2 in the boat. But none made it to the cooler. Both were undersized. Did have to work our way through the ring tails and undersized BSB though…
